Well, I just got back from spending a few days in the city and haven't had access to the internet so I have not read most of the messages on the board yet. I'll try to read them later but I hope I am not repeating anything that's already been said....I'm still a little shocked that Bernadette did not win. I actually cannot believe that the show did not win any awards! I think that was probably a pretty big disappointment to her more than not winning her award( or atleast just as disappointing!). It was bad enough that Sam did not even get nominated but to have the show not win anything.....

As for Bernadette...well I stated this in a previous post a few weeks ago...I really don't think she needs awards to prove just how AMAZINGLY talented she is!! If anything her TONY performance proved that. It says a lot that Bernadette got a standing ovation (a very enthusiastic one) and Marissa did not....sorta makes you wonder. I don't want to put Brian Stokes Mitchell down but when he got his ovation it was more of a "this is a stoic song that probably should get a standing ovation so we'll stand up " sort of ovation...although he did do a really great job with the song it was not like the ovation Bernadette got. I mean people literally jumped to their feet! I don't think it would have been humanly possible for anyone to put more power and emotion into that song like she did that night.

I went to the TONY party with a few friends afterwards and heard a few comments about how incredible Bernadette's performance was that night and surprisingly no comments about Marissa's perforance ( and no, I was not being biased...this is just what I heard being there that night) I also saw John Dossett there with Michele and talked with him for a few minutes...I felt bad for him but he seemed extremely positive and upbeat. He and Brian Stokes Mitchell actually shared a big hug...it was very cute! I think its a general consensus with those involved with Gypsy and with the fans of this production that it does have something very special about it...Bernadette. She is really one of a kind. She has a way of really making such an incredibly positive and fun environment for the people she works with and that always shows in whatever show she is in. They're all still very proud of the show I'm sure and no awards show can ever take that away!

As far as her reaction to not winning...if anything I really don't think she was expecting to win...she is not that type of person. This is a competition afterall. So the chance is always there that she is not 100% guaranteed to win! She knew she had been sick for a few performances when TONY voters were there and that that could affect their voting. What people forget is that these awards are based on only a handful of people's opinions. I know these are the biggest awards as far as musical theatre goes but it shouldn't define(wholly) a performers talent. The way I look at it is--they( once in a while) give these awards to people who can NOT sing, like Harvey and then they criticize the people who can. I'm sorry but Harvey's voice annoys the hell out of me. He may be a hell of an actor but why not give the award to someone who is a great actor and a great singer?! Especially when there are those in that category that are!'

Eversince the Producers it almost seems like commercial hype wins out over talent. I am not saying Matthew, Nathan and those involved with the Producers are not talented but it seems like the TONYS are not as classy anymore...if that makes any sense...

What really surprised me was how Marrissa did not even mention Bernadette in her speech. I know she definitely did not have too...but still. She even looked a little full of herself at the TONY after party. I guess that can sort of be expected though since she did just win the TONY.

I have to say....Bernadette's performance at the TONYS was frightening in every way...the way she sang it and acted it. Her eyes were particularly expressive too. I also saw her perform in the show this weekend and the audience was going wild. What makes it even better is how perfectly cast, I think, every person in that show is!! I really can't imagine what the show is gonna be like when their contracts start running out! I have seriously never laughed so hard during GOTTA GET A GIMMICK and I was never so moved when Bernadette sang her pieces too. And Tammy...all I have to say is that girl is unbelievably talented!!! It definitely seems like they're all very comfortable in their roles now and adlibbing more

( I was also able to go out and see Billy Joel sing the opening number for the TONYS-- boy, was that awesome!! He sat there and played for a good half hour or so warming up...the huge crowd in TImes Square totally ate that up!! It was almost like a mini concert)

I agree about the fact that Bernadette probably wasn't expecting to win. It still stinks though.
Seeing the show on Saturday evening, I haven't seen Bernadette having that much fun on stage since Annie Get Your Gun. It was the night before the Tony's and she (as well as the others) just seemed so at ease. And she was in such a great mood after, and so excited to talk about how she was going to perform Rose's Turn at the Tony's with it just being her and a brick wall when I asked her if the Rose signs would be there, or how it would be set up.

I know this loss will not ruin her life or reputation; she's probably over it already...it's the fans who are still upset. LOL

Lets face it, she is a winner! She gets a standing ovation every night for performing in one of (if not the) greatest musicals of all time. She is a living legend. years from now, people may not remember Marissa Jaret Winokur; but they'll sure as hell remember Bernadette Peters!

I agree that the standing ovation for Stokes Mitchell was different from BP's. Not that it matters but you could definately tell it was diff. More spontaneous for BP and more obligatory for BSM number (although his was nicely done as well).

Everytime someone talks about meeting/talking with BP after a show i hit myself for not staying after to get an autograph when i was there back in April. Im surprised however that BP would take the time to talk to the fans the night before the Tony's...figured she would be trying to save her voice.

Well, I don't want people to start saying I'm arrogant (let's not open that can of worms again), but she talks to people she knows; let's just leave it at that.

But she will also talk to others if they talk to her first.

Otherwise that would be very snobby of her.

Oh, she absolutely talks to people who talk to her first; she's very gracious.

mu333, your comment was not snotty at all. LOL I just know that a month or so ago there were some negative comments going back and forth on this forum because people were sick of hearing from people who actually know Bernadette. And I wouldn't be too upset about not staying around to meet her. I'm sure you will eventually.

By the way BwayBaby, I'm totally jealous that you went to the Tony Party. I knew I should have gone with you, but I would never have been able to get up for work the next day. UGGG, that's it! Next year I'm coming with you; I'll just take the next day off.
