The medley arranges parts of Arlen songs to trace an arc from the joy of beginning love to gradual disenchantment through to the pain of loss and on to eventual acceptance and transcendence. She performed it brilliantly for over 15 years in concert. This clip is from the climax to her PBS Evening At Pops show from 1982. It's included on Jeff Barnhardt's compilation DVDs. She also performed it on TV/video in her Canadian concert from the late 70s and her Hollywood Bowl concert from the mid 90s. Absolutely fantastic.
At the time it seemed such a daring choice to be willing to attempt " The Man That Got Away" and "Over The Rainbow" when both are so intimately associated with Judy Garland. She's such an incredibly courageous performer.

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 6/1/2008 at 7:25:28 AM ET Regarding those two Hollywood Bowl performances - it's really interesting to see and hear Bernadette sing the same Arlen medley nearly 20 or so years apart. Both are fantastic but the later version is definitely my favourite. The Judy songs are real stand-outs, "Get Happy" is especially good.
I suppose most of you are familiar with Rufus Wainwright's concert where he replicates the entire legendary 1963 "Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall" concert. I must admit I can't stand the colourless and monotonous quality of Wainwright's voice but love the fact that he was moved to honour Judy Garland in this way. Just listening to those Garland songs in Bernadette's Harold Arlen medley gives a glimpse of how even more fabulous that tribute concert might have been if Bernadette had been the performer.

Scottie, I actually have a copy of the Rufus Carnegie Hall concert and I do enjoy it for the sheer, uh, ambition of it all. His sister and mother sing beautifully on it. Rufus' voice is perhaps the very definition of "an acquired taste" but he has written some amazing songs. "The Art Teacher" is a particular favorite around our household.

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 6/1/2008 at 10:16:37 AM ET I have a couple of CDs by his brilliant dad, Louden Wainwright III, who wrote some of the most uniquely whimsical songs I've ever heard. One of which is a tender ballad about baby Rufus and his feeding habits
