This DVD is now for sale; it includes, according to the write-up, an appearance by Bernadette.

Merry Early Christmas!

amazon.com

If the link doesn't work, go to amazon.com and search for "Sonny and Cher". I guess it's probably on sale at some of the other on-line places, as well. I haven't checked my local stores (Borders, etc) but I'm about to.

Didn't she sing "Send In The Clowns" on that show? With the sort of (unintentionally) surreal clowns dancing bit in the middle?

I think that is the show where she sang "Send in the Clowns" and Capt. Kangaroo (Bob K???) was also a guest. Personally, I prefer the version of "Clowns" she sang in 1994? at the SMU tribute to Sondheim. Did anyone else see that one where Sondheim accompanied her on the piano. It was cute because at the end of the number, she looked at Sondheim sort of like I hope that was ok or did I do that well?

Is she also on one of the Bing Crosby Christmas releases? Anyone know what that is?

Bing here:

Bing discussion

SMU discussion somewhere, can't locate it offhand; anyway, I love the way she sings "..Clowns" and I wish she would record it or include it in her concerts.

Can people who have seen the SMU appearance give us details? Please? I searched but can't find a thread on it.

Thanks for the Bing link. I vaguely recall stumbling across that program and trying to watch because I had seen references to Peters being on that but must have turned my head or blinked when she was on.

I think she would make a great Desiree. I was hoping she would be in the Kennedy Center prod. back in 2002 or the revival but alas we have Glen Close . . .

I think A&E broadcast the SMU tribute a couple of times. It featured students from SMU's drama dept., Chip Zien, Debra Monk and Peters. Peters sang Broadway Baby, No One is Alone, and Send in the Clowns. I can't remember what the others did, but there were some taped comments from Sondheim and Hal Prince, I think.

"Send in the Clowns"--just Bernadette alone on stage with Sondheim playing the piano--very well-sung, not overly emotional, a little rueful, almost quietly thoughtful or self-contained. No tears. Very powerful, proving that you don't have to shout to be heard.

I think the show ends with the students, Zien, Monk, Bernadette all surrounding Sondheim and singing "Old Friends".

Off to the mall; this could be a serious mistake.

Jean, I think that's a perfect description of Bernadette's rendition of that song -- much more effective than those who mangle numbers in an attempt to put their stamp on a well-known song. I once heard Betty Buckley sing "Send in the Clowns" as an encore and it was almost unrecognizable by the time she and her pianist/musical director were through with it.

Jean's description would also fit the wonderful performance of "The Way We Were" that Peters gave on a special with Marvin Hamlisch accompanying on the piano. Probably why I like that version so much too. Didn't have all the vocal histrionics that Streisand often attaches to the number
