I know they do have taped versions of GYPSY (movie with Roz Russel and Midler) and I have the stage copy of the Tyne Daily version, but is anyone else completely pissed off that there is no tape for the BP version (other than the LC tape and bootlegs?) I know they usually tape all of sondheims shows (but i am also aware usually the only ones taped are his lyrics AND music, and of course he didnt do them both for GYPSY).........I was just wondering

Well, in my fantasy world, they would have taken this latest Gypsy and adapted it for film starring, of course, Bernadette. But that's probably not going to happen. Hopefully, the people with the bootlegs are willing to spread the wealth.

Bootlegs are bad bad bad and totally illegal! Although I would be willing to pay the right price!

I think Arthur Laurents is a main concern and reason for the taping not being done for Gypsy. If it was strictly Sondheim's say, I bet their would have been one.

he's a bitter old man. I've seen the Tyne Daly video....at Lincoln Center archives, in May. But it was never filmed for wide distribution. It was fascinating to see. And I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has about the production.

Can anyone access the Lincoln Center archives? And are there many Broadway productions available to see? .... esp. Bernadette ones?

You have to have a "reason" so I said I was writing a paper on burlesque for school. haha. Many say that Tyne Daly was sick when the CD was recorded, but on the video she sounds just like that. Bernadette's voice is divine, Tyne's isn't. But she is one hell of an actress and is VERY scary. When she says "and now, I can make you..." it was pretty frightening. Her costumes were awful, not flattering at all. Ugh she had this awful pink frock on that looked like a nurse's outfit during "Some People." Christa Moore played Louise and was so spectacular. I liked Tammy in the role, but this girl was something else. If you have the CD you know she has a marvelous voice, but her acting was extremely powerful, and at the end, there was no hug between Rose and Louise. It was sad because I didn't get the sense that they had made up from fighting, it was like Louise had outgrown her and well Rose, "it sucks to be you!." Curtain.

A lot of the directoral decisions were similar to Mendes, the strippers were definately not nearly as good as our BLISS and her gals. And Herbie had a very nasally annoying voice, and he was a mousy little guy and I couldn't stand him.

Thats all I can think of to say about it right now.
One day I'll go back and view "Song & Dance."

Jarred -- I am not meaning to question your accuracey, but are you SURE the Daly version was a legitimate commercially available tape?

I've been a GYPSY fan for a long time and saw the Tyne Daly production twice on Broadway. However, this is the first time in the fifteen years since that revival opened that I have ever heard of a videotape of it. And, I sure would have bought a copy if I had. It's also the kind of thing you'd almost be sure to find popping up on ebay from time to time.

Maybe this one slipped past me, but I usually have a pretty good eye for these things.

I am just wondering out loud.

Positive. There were even a few copies on EBAY about a year and a half ago, but they went quick cause someone had converted it to DVD and i wanted a copy, but i guess the gypsy fans snatched them up.

Jarred, the key words in Elmo's question are "legitimate commercially available" as in lawful and authorized. What you're talking about is an illegal bootleg. I hate to be a killjoy, but lately there seems to be an increasing number of references to them on the board. My suggestion would be to avoid this topic; many boards don't even allow them to be mentioned.
