Tulips premiered in Canadian movie theaters on this date. It apparently opened in some U.S. theaters later in October. Bernadette played the role of Rutanya Wallace in this low-budget Canadian black comedy about depression and suicide. It was filmed in Montreal in November 1979.

Pennies From Heaven premiered in movie theaters, with Bernadette playing the role of schoolteacher turned prostitute Eileen Everson. Her co-star was Steve Martin. Pauline Kael, in her New Yorker review, described it as "thrilling...intensely alive...extraordinary...just about perfection."
