Impromptu premiered in movie theaters. This was the first film directed by James Lapine, who directed Bernadette on Broadway in Sunday In The Park With George and Into The Woods. Bernadette played the role of French countess Marie d'Agoult, the mistress of Franz Liszt.

The Tonight Show

Bernadette guested on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Other guests included Magic Johnson. Bernadette sang "I'm Flying" and "Unexpected Song" and discussed trying to observe an eclipse and a planetary allignment, and being single.

Carol Burnett Show

Bernadette guested on an episode of this short- lived Carol Burnett variety series on CBS. The other guest was Tony Roberts. Highlights included the song "I'm Flying" and the skit "I-90 Diner."
