I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what to put into a college portfolio for a theatre major? I'm not an actor; I'm going to be majoring in direction & production but I have absolutely no idea what to put into my portfolio. Any ideas out there? Thank you!

I have no specific words of advice as to what should go in your portfolio, since I did not study theater.
However:
-Would it be possible to get in touch with your program's administrators? A department's administrative assistant is the one who knows *everything* about the department,so that may be someone you could consider. If you don't feel comfortable with that, how about current students-see if your university has organizations online with email addresses. Perhaps you could contact them and ask.
Be warned, though:I am not at all informed about the "politically correct" way of finding information about such competitive fields. If this is bad advice,I hope someone will call me on it. Seriously.
If you don't get a response here, try the All That Chat board, since I've seen questions about college stuff on that board. Be prepared for the possibility of some not-so-nice comments. The Broadway World site might also be a good source.
I'm sure you've looked at your department's materials-could there be a section on what it does/does not want? I know when I was helping a young person look for information on universities and conservatories,CCM had a list of what it did not want to see/hear at auditions.
Peterson's Professional Degree Programs in Visual and Performing Arts directory may have additional information. The 2004 edition is already out. If your library doesn't have it,you can buy it through several online sources if it's not available to purchase locally. Use this instead of the Arco guide. The Peterson guide is updated regularly. Arco is not,and hasn't been since 1998,as far as I know.
Other than that-I'm not sure what to tell you. I do *not* remember how much the Peterson's guide includes information about the non-acting aspect of performing arts. I have consulted it for some patrons, but it was for acting. But the Peterson's guides are fab.
Peterson's website
I don't know if the Peterson's site will help in this case, but thought I'd throw it in anyway.
Most importantly-where are you applying? (If you're OK with telling, that is)
Good luck! Rather long for such general info, huh? I wish I could help more, but I'm sure you'll find better information soon.
