Oh, come on! Stop picking on Patti. You guys are still upset because Bernadette didn't win. Not Patti's fault. I saw both shows-- Patti and Bernadette(twice)-- and I have to say... While I love Bernadette, I think Patti owns this role. She really deserved to win. Bernadette (and you all will hate me for this) but she missed too many shows. It got to be a joke.

Jeny, I 100% agree with your post.

LuPone is ultimately a faker, but there are a lot of gullible chumps out there. That's the way the mainstream world works.

Anon perhaps you should be posting on a Patti fan board rather than a Bernadette one. As far as Bernadette missing shows I have much more respect for Bernadette for respecting her audience enough not to go on sick than for Patti having an announcement made before shows that she is sick.

"gullible chumps"...
Sorry... Bernadette wasn't good! Get over it! She was great in Sunday in the Park; Into the Woods; Annie Get Your Gun... But Gypsy wasn't her role. Sorry. Don't slam Patti. She's just playing a part. She's allowed to do that. Just because Bernadette played a part doesn't mean it has to die the moment she leaves. That's not theatre.

Okay, anon. Let me at you. First of all, no one owns a role. Even the great, original Merman didn't own the role of Rose. And LuPone, who gave a controversial, me-me-me performance certainly doesn't own it. And what on earth are you doing dredging up that old red herring about Bernadette missing shows. She had one short, discrete illness--after that she had virtually perfect attendance for the next full year. Who are you trying to kid, anyway?

Mikey, is that you?

Regarding Patti, it's not about how loud you can belt, it's about how well you can sing and act at the same time...........and acting includes displaying emotion in your role......something COMPLETELY lacking in Patti's performance. Bernadette was definitely ROBBED!!!!!

I've met both Patti and Bernadette in person, and I must say, Bernadette is DEFINITELY more personable, GENUINE, and the kindest person on the planet!!!! Patti is all about hype and no heart!!!!

And as for anon, if you're going to post things like that, you need to find another forum, because this forum is for BERNADETTE fans/admirers, not PATTI fans/admirers.

I never said Patti wasn't allowed to play a role. She is and is obviously doing so to great success. But if you think that as you so graciously put it that "Bernadette just wasn't good get over it" why are on this board? As far as slamming actors perhaps you should take your own advice before judging others.

Anon, I just saw your latest post. I'm not getting over anything! Bernadette wasn't good? Okay, you're correct; she wasn't good--she was great! There. Does that satisfy you?

Of course, Patti LuPone is allowed to play the part. And everyone in the audience is allowed to have and express an opinion. Mine is that she was vastly inferior to Bernadette Peters.

I am the first to admit that when it comes to Gypsy, I am 100% biased. Yes, I am still upset that Bernadette didn't win. Because I really think that she deserved it. She brought so much to the role, an extra layer of humanity that hadn't truly been added to the character by most other actresses. That's why everyone went on and on about her being miscast. She wasn't miscast at all. She just dug deeper into the role and brought out something new.

Patti plays the role more traditionally, which, obviously, people like. But if I felt that she was a convincing Rose, I would be applauding her win. I just don't feel anything when I watch her. I see her staging in her performance- like when she went and grabbed the luggage cart for a second right at the end of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" tonight. It looked so rehearsed, so unnatural. I felt no desperation. I felt nothing for her at all. Vocally, she blew the roof off, but it was at the expense of emotion. It was at the expense of the depth of the character.

Bernadette was the BEST Mama Rose EVER!!!!! I love Ethel and Angie, but Bernadette was the best by far!!! Anyone who thinks otherwise, should not be on this forum. Those people on the Tony board are idiots!!! I know there wasn't much to choose from this past year, but "Sunday in the Park with George" or "Into the Heights" should have won for best actress in a musical!!!!! ANYONE BUT PATTI!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad Stephen Sondheim didn't show up.....he knows who the REAL Mama Rose is!!!!!

Having seen South Pacific on Broadway, the Tony performance didn't begin to do it justice. Kelli especially was not at her best. The production itself is pretty flawless and I'm beyond thrilled that it won so many awards. As for Patti, I was pleasantly surprised although I am not a fan. I wish Kelli had won though.

I saw Gypsy yesterday afternoon before the Tonys.

Patti completely deserved to win. To say she lacked dramatic emotion?? Well I just don't understand that accusation. No need to explain it. I know Patti is one of those people you either love or hate (just watch that Will and Grace episode) lol Still, I think she acts the role amazingly.

Also, people saying it's not fair that she won and Bernadette did not...they're not up against the same people and shows.

By theroies here, no one should ever win a Tony for playing Mama Rose because Bernadette didn't? Now THAT would not be fair.

I thought the telecast was fun. A lot of differnet musical numbers. I didn't necessarily enjoy all of them, but it was a good representation of Broadway. I thought it was lame that Stephen Sondheim wasn't there. Hopefully nothing is wrong with him though.

They really could have left the Lion King out and possibly the trifecta of shows not nominated that got to perform (though I do love Megan Mulally). Perhaps then they wouldn't have to push important categories like Best Play revival into the group of awards not presented on the live telecast.

Karen, now, now .... this SITPWG is a rather brilliant production. Jenna Russell is not in any way like Julie Andrews (she's a hundred times better actor for starters), and Daniel Evans is not in any way like Tony Blair (not unless Tony Blair has shrunk and suddenly changed from a Scot to a little Welsh man). Jenna and Daniel received West End Olivier awards for their excellent portrayals of Dot and George -- not for imitations of Mary Poppins and an ex Prime Minister.

"There’s a lot in the world for us to turn our attention to — helping people, helping animals, and helping animals help people." ... Bernadette Peters, August, 2007
