"Gypsy" opened on May 21, 1959. It ran for 702 performances.

All day long today I thought today was the 21st. This is what happens when I'm too entertained. Oh wait, there's no such thing in my world. Keep the entertainment coming please.

You know I could have sworn I had read about Gypsy a couple of days ago but I never did look into but your post did have me confused.

"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987

Still, our Gypsy consciousness was elevated! At least mine was, I blogged on and on about it. I'll probably add more as I learn more or think of more. Gypsy is very important to me as a theatre fan and of course as a Bernadette fan.

Here's something else: the original Gypsy production lost every Tony category in which it was nominated. Went home with zilch that night.

1960 Nominee: Actor, Supporting or Featured (Musical) Jack Klugman (Gypsy)

1960 Nominee: Actress (Musical) Ethel Merman (Gypsy)

1960 Nominee: Actress, Supporting or Featured (Musical) Sandra Church (Gypsy)

1960 Nominee: Conductor and Musical Director Milton Rosenstick (Gypsy)

1960 Nominee: Costume Designer Raoul Penè Du Bois (Gypsy)

1960 Nominee: Director (Musical) Jerome Robbins (Gypsy)

1960 Nominee: Musical Gypsy by Arthur Laurents. Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, music by Jule Styne. Produced by David Merrick and Leland Hayward.

1960 Nominee: Scenic Designer (Musical) Jo Mielziner (Gypsy)

Yep - it had tough competition that year. The 1960 Tony Awards

But as Bernadette said, "It's not about prizes."

Laughing...exactly why I posted that. Tonys are hit and miss, like any award.
