| posted: 10/7/2005 at 9:49:02 PM ET Well, if you're looking for a review...I saw the first preview this past monday night. TO sum up how I felt after the performance, I felt it to be an honor to be there, basically. It was THAT good.
* for those who haven't seen the show, I'm going to leave out directional changes that are new to this production of Sweeney so there isn't any spoilers in this review*
Everything about the show from the minimalist set, which consisted of a coffin(used for everything) and a backboard of 'baking' good to the exquisite lighting and costumes was brillant.
The costumes, if you are not familair with the show, are very modern. They aren't pertaining to the 19th century when the story is set and the characters don't have specific accents. Pierrili (sp?) whho is played by a woman actually goes from an Italian to an American accent.
The performers are so unbelievably talented, its hard to actually describe. They each play a mirrade of instruments that luckily don't take away but add to the performances, deepening the layers of the characters. On to the leads in the show...Patti Lupone is subtle, controlled and is not the Patti we know. She knows exaclty what she's doing and portrays Mrs. Lovett in that fashion. I do have to admit that I was a little unsure of Cerveris when I first heard he was cast but boy did he blow me away. His interpretation of Sweeney is much more violent and quite insanity than I had remembered from other Sweeneys.
In ending, using the usual saying "RUN don't walk to the theater". This IS the show of the season and I plan on seeing it many many more times (I actually have a ticket for a week before opening-when its frozen so I can report then on any changes).
"I chose and my world was shaken. So what? The choice may have been mistaken; the choosing was not. You have to move on."
"Sometimes people leave you, halfway through the wood. Others may deceive you You decide what's good. You decide alone, But no one is alone."

From: New York, NY | posted: 10/7/2005 at 11:33:45 PM ET i LOVED LOVED LOVED it. so fantastic. patti was the best part in my opinion. she is just GENIUS. so funny and her voice... my god.
so yes, i definitely recommend it. you can get $36 tickets for rear mezz and the theatre is really small so it is a perfect view.
run! go see this if you can!

From: New York, NY | posted: 10/8/2005 at 12:19:24 AM ET rear mezz is totally worth it for $36. the upper level as a whole wasn't crowded at all, so i got to move down like 3 rows and to the center when it started. some people even moved into the boxes after intermission and the ushers were really cool about it. they were like "go ahead!"
the theatre is pretty teensy-tiny, so you can see well anywhere it seemed.

From: Boston | posted: 10/21/2005 at 12:36:27 AM ET Sister Rose (her 3rd time!) and I attended tonight and loved our 2nd center seats but loved the performances even more. This is not the Sweeney we've seen before, and to reiterate what Gypsy1527 said, this is most certainly a new (and BRILLIANT) Patti. Michael and Donna Lynn are such dolls. Sister Rose and I often delight in talking about Sondheim with them.

From: NYC | posted: 10/21/2005 at 11:26:02 AM ET Third time was even more charming. The stage door experience was wonderful - had such great conversations with Donna Lynn and Michael. Miss Patti is lovely too - I always thought she would be different at the stage door, but she took pictures and signed everything and spent time with each person. She reminds me of another special Broadway diva!
I'm looking forward to going on Halloween! Oooooh, spooky!
