I am planning a trip to New York in August and I am deciding on a show to see. Out of the following list of shows, which would you guys suggest. Keep in mind that I am 17 years old and will be seeing this show with my mother.

*Spamalot
*Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
*Light in the Piazza
*Spelling Bee
*Chitti Chitti Bang Bang
*Avenue Q

The only show I haven't seen on your list is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I would suggest Light in the Piazza (very beautiful and moving if a little far from satisfying), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and possibly Spelling Bee. I'm not sure if you will get as much out of Spelling Bee as perhaps your mother will. It's really geared toward someone who has been out of childhood for quite some time, looking back at their experiences. I'm not sure you are far enough away from the years of the characters to really be as touched by it. Though I still think you would enjoy it as its quite funny.

Unless you are a real Monty Python fan, I would not suggest Spamalot. It just did absolutely nothing for me. If you truly had no other shows to see, there are some fun moments in it but I think your other choices are far better. And I would definitely not suggest Avenue Q for you and your mom unless you have an EXTREMELY open relationship about sex. Avenue Q is a very adult and often graphic show which I think would make you AND your mom quite uncomfortable together. Go and see it in a couple of years with your friends.

Moljul pretty much said what I would have. I'd go with Light in the Piazza or Spelling Bee. Spamalot seems like it's for middle-aged men with Monty Python obsessions. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang seems like it's for children. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels sounds like an "also-ran" Producers imitation (plus, I don't like David Yazbek). Avenue Q would be good, but it depends on how liberal-minded your mother is.

As usual, if you have unlimited time and money, they're probably all worth seeing for some aspect, but how many have that luxury?

One more thing to consider, Avenue Q and Spamalot will run on for years, but Light in the Piazza is closing in a few months so the opportunity is very limited.

Have to disagree about Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. There is some somewhat sophmoric humor but overall it is a very funny show with some really wonderful songs and a FABULOUS cast. John Lithgow is wonderful as is Gregory Jbara and Joanna Gleason is amazing. I was not a Producers fan at all but I really loved DRS and I've been listening to the cast recording ever since.

And from what your icon expresses broadwaybaby-lovinbernadette, you might enjoy DRS with none other than my favorite Joanna Gleason. Let's be honest, we all need some Joanna once in a while!

I LOVED Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I enjoyed Spamalot but more for the actors as opposed to the actual story. Spelling Bee is very funny too. I haven't seen Light or Chitty yet. I think I might avoid Avenue Q especially since your mother is going with you. Basically, I agree with Moljul.

Have a fun time with whatever you see!

Definitely see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (have seen once & am going again on the 4th - it is perfectly funny and very well acted), The Light in the Piazza (have seen twice & am going again on the 4th - it is gorgeous) and Spelling Bee (have seen twice - just so special in so many ways) - these are the best musicals that have been out in a long while. I am not a fan of Ave Q and I haven't seen Spamalot yet. I'm working on seeing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang because I've heard great things about the cast and of course, the car! Jan Maxwell won the Drama Desk Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Chitty last night - and I love her voice and she is a great comedienne.

And when I saw DRS there was a very large group of teenagers there and they loved it - probably 15-17 year old boys and girls and all seemed to get the humor.

Oh, dear.
I'm a middle-aged woman who got a ticket to see Spamalot in a few weeks.

Annie, Don't worry. It's a cute show and you will laugh during it. It just kind of left me empty afterwards, like a fun sitcom. I can't remember a single song or really any of the jokes. But of course some people just love it. And the cast is really wonderful.

Thanks, moljul. (Now I shall not have to taunt you again, and say that your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries, in an outrageous French accent. )
Perhaps it helps to be of a certain age (or have worked in bureaucracy a number of years) to fully understand why, for example, the Pythons' Ministry of Silly Walks is so funny.

Anyway, I'm planning to see "Doubt" also this trip; I think it's a good balance....

Well, both Doubt and Spamalot won best play and best musical from the Drama Desk. I'm seeing Spamlalot in September at the request of an out-of-town guest. I probably would have seen it anyway because of the actors and I have seen the movie a number of times.

I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang this weekend. If you are a fan of the movie, then it's a cute show to see. The effects are amazing. However, the show itself leaves something to be desired. Most of the actors overact. However, Jan Maxwell and Raul Esparza are amazing. It is a cute family show and would be perfectly fine for you to see with your mother. If you have never seen a Broadway show before, this would be a good one to see as the stage and lighting and effects are spectacular (the car actually flies out over the audience). However, if you are more interested in the substance of the show itself, I would suggest something else. I have heard fabulous things about Light in the Piazza. I would suggest thinking about what genre of show you want to see, and then decide from there.

Add Sweet Charity to your maybe list. Chip and I saw it last night (thanks to Chip for sharing his student discount). I was very pleasantly surprised by Christina Applegate's performance. She gave 110% and has great comedic timing. Her voice and dancing are a little weak, but overall a great performance. The show is a classic with fantastic lyrics and will have you smiling by the end.

Thanks for the relpies!! Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is looking pretty good. I'll probably decide between that and Light in the Piazza. I love all of the actors in DRS, so I'm really excited to see it. Thank you so much again!!
