From: NYC | posted: 6/14/2005 at 11:20:55 PM ET I saw "The Constant Wife" tonight. Kate Burton is delightful as the wife and Lynn Redgrave was very funny as her post-Victorian age mother. John looked fantastic and was good. It is done in a British accent and of course the only Brit was Lynn - but everybody else did a fairly decent job of it. Its a funny play written in a feminist voice by a man pre-ERA. John kisses Kate in the second act and you could tell that she was swooning. I think his leading ladies enjoy acting opposite him. There were critics in the audience - saw Peter Filicia and Roma "Back to you" Torrey but not Riedel the Needle who I would have been glad to sneer toward.

I enjoyed the play--I am very fond of the comedy of manners type of play, and I've seen far too little comedies recently, so this was a treat. I had never seen Kate Burton on stage--I don't think she has a very good stage voice (a little too thin and -oh, high--for my taste), and she seemed to be striking a pose when she was about to deliver some important-or witty-line--but all in all, she was fine as the strong and unsentimental center of the play. Lynn Redgrave, of course, nailed her character and in my eyes stood out so much that everyone else paled in comparison--a problem when you cast REAL English acting royalty with ordinary American mortals.
I adore John, as most of you know, and I thought he did a good job, but I think he was straining, as were most of the cast, to give the right tone to the play. He strikes me more of an all-American "guy" than an Englishman.
The play looked great--costumes and set perfect.

I only go to NY for the matinee, so that is all I saw--made a quick trip to Macy's, ate at Becco (grilled shrimp), picked up tickets to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and back to Cafe Europa for bus dinner. Bus movie was Coach Carter-didn't like it--got home close to 11--much traffic getting out of NY and on part of the NJ TP.
All in all a good NY day.
[note-forgot to mention--John's bio in the playbill says that he is in "this summer's "Little Manhattan". IMDB doesn't show him as in the cast, but let's remember to watch for this one.]

From: NYC | posted: 6/23/2005 at 8:36:36 PM ET Glad you liked it - I liked LR the best - thrilling to see her - just a week before I saw her niece Natasha Richardson in Streetcar. I'm thinking about going to BAM to see her sister Vanessa Redgrave. I would get a kick of seeing all the Redgraves in live theatre in less than a month (I guess there are more acting Redgraves but of course Lynn and Vanessa are the real royalty of the family).
YAY you're going to see DRS! I hope you love it! PAFan, Chip, ANH, Mandy and I are all going to see it after Bway Barks.
