From: northern VA | posted: 8/7/2005 at 6:46:29 PM ET I have the lovely Meet Me in St. Louis DVD, but I'm watching it on TCM right now. It's at one of my favorite scenes-Esther needs assistance turning off the lights. It's a perfect combination of tender romance ("Over the banister leans a face") and comedy (Esther has the same perfume as grandfather, and the final handshake-poor Esther's face!). I love, love, love this movie.
And consider when the movie was made and when the story took place. Could "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" been written at any time other than deep into World War II? There must have already been nostalgia for the turn of the century at that time-after the Depression, the first world war, and then the second, there must have been a longing for that time in American history. And the movie ends in 1904-ten years later, the world became a hell on earth.

If any of you are Judy Garland fans and haven't yet seen "A Star is Born" I would highly highly recommend it! I own all of Judy's movies on DVD and this is by far my favorite!

| posted: 8/8/2005 at 9:11:04 AM ET "A Star Is Born" is amazing. I cry EVERY time I watch it.
I'm so annoyed the way they chopped it to bits in the editing room. Even though they have the sound and some still photos for the additional scenes.
The most emotional moment (besides when he's walking into the ocean while she sings), is when she goes back to the theater and sees the lipstick heart on the wall with their initials. Uhh
lol Now I want to go watch that movie.
My other favorite Judy movie is "The Clock." Her only dramatic role while working for MGM. She was really so good in that movie.

From: northern VA | posted: 8/8/2005 at 10:17:38 AM ET Christine- TCM edited A Star is Born? I didn't see it yesterday if TCM showed it, but the time I did see it on their channel, they did show the stills and sound. I know that they, whenever possible, show unedited films. But sometimes they slip (the head of programming posts on the site's message boards, and has acknoweledged this).

From: NYC | posted: 8/8/2005 at 10:44:53 AM ET I think what happened was the Warner Bros edited A Star Is Born because it was long. I know I saw this on Biography or somewhere. It was a masterpiece for George Kukor, James Mason and especially Judy and instead of the accolades she deserved, Grace Kelly took home the Oscar for a movie nobody really remembers. Some people say it was just to punish Judy for all of the trouble she caused with previous movies - we all know now that the troubles were actually caused by the studio since they forced her to take drugs for weight, sleep, mood, etc.

| posted: 8/8/2005 at 10:46:06 AM ET No, they didn't edit it...at least whenever I've seen it on TCM they haven't. I just mean, in general, when the movie was first released in the 50's, the studio edited it and so now all we have is those stills and the sound. We'll never see those scenes as if they were filmed, because they weren't filmed.
Like nowadays we have DVDs with deleted scenes because the scenes were filmed and then edited out; but we can still see them.
When movies were shot years ago, it was different types of film and materials. Studios were not as quick to shoot scenes that they might not use.

| posted: 8/8/2005 at 10:52:26 AM ET I'm bitter that Judy did not win the Oscar that year. I hate that they actually had cameras in her hospital room after she had just given birth because everyone insisted she would win, and then she didn't and they all just shut down and left. SO mean

| posted: 8/8/2005 at 3:42:00 PM ET Being the biggest Judy Garland fan, I think I can settle this controversy.
A Star in Born indeed was edited down from 3 hours originally. The reason we do not have the deleted scenes was because they were destoryed and not preserved (as film is today). This information can be found on the bonus features of the "A Star is Born" DVD. Like Christine stated, still photos and audio are avialable on the DVD to watch and listen.

From: Arizona | posted: 8/8/2005 at 4:48:01 PM ET I enjoyed watching Presenting Lily Mars for the first time. The Harvey Girls is a great movie too. There's a nice little museum in this historic hotel at the Grand Canyon that is dedicated to the real life Harvey Girls with photos, waitress costumes and other stuff showing the work they did. I saw the movie for the first time a few years ago after seeing the museum.
I really enjoy Judy's films from the 40s. Even though I'm aware of everything she went throuh it always shocks me to see her appearances in the 60s. I saw a TV interview she did from 1967 (I can't remember which show) in which Joey and Lorna joined her and it broke my heart...she was already in such bad shape.

| posted: 8/9/2005 at 10:37:16 AM ET If you want to see some great Judy work, watch some of her later films: "I Could Go On Singing" (which was her last film) and "Judgment At Nuremberg" which is a long movie, but totally worth seeing if just for her scenes. "A Child Is Waiting" is good, but not as good as the other 2.
