Sprocket was born 13 years ago in a utility shed belonging to a kindly family who lived miles away from town. His mother was a thin, sweet yellow Lab mix who lucked out when she found a warm dry place to have her litter. Of course a few weeks later the kindly family needed to find homes for all of those puppies. At the time I lived in a pet-restricted apartment, but I couldn't resist and brought Sprocket home anyway, and resolved to find my first house within a month. He was eight weeks old.
Since then we have lived in five homes together, been all over the east coast, seen the ocean and the mountains together, and he even graciously let me get married to a gal with three cats. Big breeds are considered seniors at 8 years, and it is amazing to have had Sprocket around for 13 years. How old is he? Well, if he were a human, he would be like Arthur Larents or Studs Terkel! These days he naps alot more, the daily walks have gotten more leisurely and shorter, and arthritis makes it tough to get around as easily. Still a very happy fella tho. To say that he changed my life would be an understatement. He's been the best friend I could ever have. Happy birthday to ya!
"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990
"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987
