Beloved 'Undercover Kitty' Fred dies

By Anthony M. DeStefano

Fred, the loveable undercover kitty, who captured the heart of the city with his exploits for law enforcement, is dead.

The one year-old American short haired cat, who was instrumental in nabbing a suspected bogus veterinarian earlier this year, was accidentally killed yesterday when he wandered into oncoming traffic outside his home, said a spokesman for Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes.

Fred was adopted by assistant district attorney Carol Moran about a year ago as part of a foster care program run by the nonprofit New York Animal Care and Control agency.

He was then used in February as part of an undercover operation by Hynes office, which led to the arrest of Steven Vassall, 28, of Brooklyn. Vassall was accused of posing as a fake veterinarian.

Because of his exploits, Fred became a celebrated feline, appearing at news conferences, garnering a special law enforcement award and recently received an award on Broadway from "Broadway Barks 8" a pet adopt-a-thon in the theater district. The Broadway award was hosted by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters.

Fred was going to take part in a special "Legal Lives" program run by Hynes office. The plan was for Fred to teach school children about the importance of caring for animals.

"We had big plans for him," said a saddened spokesman for Hynes today.

This is indeed sad news as well as a strong reminder of the dangers of allowing acat to be an "outdoor cat". Just like dogs, cats should not be allowed to wander outdoors. Teach them to walk on a leash or provide an safe, enclosed area for play in your yard. If you can't provide it, your cat will survive indoors. I'm sure he was very loved and otherwise well cared for but I hate it say its just dangerous and careless to allow a cat to wander by itself.

I can't believe that the owner of Fred did not realize his value and understand the dangers of letting a cat roam into the outside world. Actually, this kind of carelessnes and stupidy makes me furious! I wish Mary or Bernadette had taken and protected him!

To the loveliest lady of song!
You will keep on giving me joy forever...
