As stated above, I hope you all had a wonderful day filled with love of some sort.

And/or, if not, I hope you had a V-day! as in... aware of what The Vagina Monologues has to say. I just performed in it and am glad that I got out of the love/lust Valentine's Day cliche' today and experienced a very different day than ever before. I hope you all learn about it, if you don't already know about it. And, if you have any questions feel free to post or PM me.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Love,
your fellow Bernadette fan

To be honest, I've never read or seen The Vagina Monologues, but somehow, along the way, I've picked up the impression that I would absolutely hate it.

My question is, could you please explain what it is that makes some people--like you, for instance--so enthusiastic.

To me, it just sounds embarrassing and gross. Maybe I come across like an idiot for asking, but I'm sincerely curious.

futuremamarose, was your performance yesterday? For V-Day? That's very cool.

(It's become an event for college campuses to perform The Vagina Monologues on Valentine's Day to raise awareness of domestic violence/violence against women.)

Karen, find a copy of The Vagina Monologues and read it! Some parts (hello!) are silly, funny, some are very hard to read/watch (such as the Bosnian women part).

It may be overhyped, but it became a phenomenon for a reason. Women are made to feel embarrassed/grossed about their vagina, and this has brought it out in the open. Orgasms, rape, why women are reluctant to talk about their sexuality-it's all there, and more. It does get silly at times, but that's good, because there are some very difficult aspects to get through.

It's very feminist/womanist, liberal, etc. I encourage you to read it.
There are some criticisms of the monologues-some feel the piece is more about violence and the victimization of women than sexual pleasures.

If you don't like it, that's definitely fine. I know some very intelligent and sophisticated women who didn't particularly care for it. I don't think it's the best theatrical event in the history of theater. But I think it's changed many people's thinking about certain things, and it made futuremamarose think about Valentine's Day in another light. That makes me happy right there. (I celebrate Valentine's for everyone-family and friends. I don't have a special and very best darling anymore, but I got kisses and Barbie/Scooby Doo cards from my storytime kids yesterday, and that made it great.)

Just read it once, and you'll know for sure!

Jenn

You're right. I will read it (or at least, skim it) before I say anything further.

I completely agree with what Jenn said. I guess I am a Liberal and I am a humanist, not a feminist, but feel that last night's production at Pace Univ.'s Schimmel Theater was really entertaining for all while it made aware of violence against women and opened up a forum to talk openly. Now, I have a great group of friends, my castmembers, who are no longer afraid to say words that many would feel absurd to say on a daily basis.

Our production was set in a high school, where there was a cafeteria scene, basketball team, teachers, cheerleaders, etc. I was, fortunately, a part of almost every scene, and had multiple lines, dances, cheers, and a monologue. I did one of the "Memory of her Face" monologues. It starts with "When she woke up her face was on fire..."
We had on eccentric black for this depressing montage and I had intense red stage makeup. It was really moving and I felt more attached to it last night than in any rehearsals ever before.

I totally respect anyone who is not at all interested in the matter, but in my experience this show is great. There are some too-much-information moments, but that'd kind of what the show is about- putting it all out there for people to sink in whatever they can. The "Memory of her Face" montage is definitely the most emotionally triggering moments and definitely made a lot of people cry, from what I was told. Then there are also some really hilarious and outrageous monologues like "The Woman Who Liked to Make Vaginas Happy." This is a monologue on different types of moans that the woman would hear, and as a cheerleader in the show, we would recipricate what she would say/ the moans she would do.

Overall, I had fun, and I hope all of you had a great Valentine's day whether it be for the above reason or for any other.

Thanks for the comments. Very interesting to hear about your production. I had hoped to pick up a copy at work today, but they were all checked out. So now I'm on the wait list. I also noticed there was a video of an HBO production, so I requested that as well. Did anyone see that?

I didn't even know that a production had been filmed. Did you see who was in it? For a while, it was like Love Letters. They would have highly recognizable names in casts around the country (not as frequently as Love Letters, since they had to memorize their lines).

The cataloguing didn't list the cast. It just said the original stage production directed by Joe Mantello, interspersed with documentary footage of Eve Ensler's comments and interviews with a variety of women, as broadcast on HBO in 1998. I'll have to wait and see who's in it.
