Does anyone recall Bernadette singing "What'll I Do" (Irving Berlin) on a TV special about mid-1970's? In the space of 30 seconds my opinion of her increased about 500%. I'd love to get a recording of this performance.

I don't recall the TV show you mention, but she did sing that song to -- and on--Johnny Carson's Tonight show, I think in April 1992. If you can get ahold of that show, you can see/hear her sing it. (I don't know how to get those old shows, but there is a Johnny Carson website that might help.) I doubt that she ever recorded it.

She also sang "What'll I Do" as part of a lavish musical tribute to Irving Berlin that she and Peter Allen performed on the 1983 Academy Awards. When she and Allen toured together in 1989, they did a much compressed version of that medley at the end of the show. It was great!

What’ll I Do, I would love for Bernadette to record the song. It still rings in my mind after seeing her performance. I am glad to see other people want it as well.

She sang it on Johnny Carson in the mid-70's. I have a vivid memory of it. As she sang softly, with eyes wide open, a single tear welled up and ran down her check. It was a precious performance. That is my first and most lasting memory of her.

Bernadette sings "What'll I do" better than anyone. It sends chills down my arms just to think about it. I was just searching the internet to see if it was recorded anywhere. I would love to own a copy.

She's amazing!

This is one of my favorite songs of all time and Bernadette's rendition on the Tonight Show is simply breathtaking. PM me.

I, too, fell in love with her when I saw her
sing that song. Still no recording? I've been looking for years!

That was the best vocal performance I've ever seen. Why don't we see/hear her sing that over and over?

Stumbled upon this fun site. How have I gotten along for so long without it?

In honor of Valentine's Day, BroadwayWorld.com is running their third annual "What's the Most Romantic Broadway Love Song Ever?" poll. They ask a long list of Broadway figures that question. Bob Mackie not only mentioned "What'll I Do," he specified Bernadette's rendition. Sweet.

I rarely watch the Tonight Show, but I saw that. I hardly dared to breathe while she was singing it. Stunning.

Here's a different performance of that song from a 1977 television special.

I remember Bernadette singing this song in the 70's and it carried me along making me also cry at the end with her, feeling the pain that emulated from her. I was so impressed with her ability to make me feel such that I became from that day on, a fan of hers forever. It was so moving that I've never forgotten it over all these years and I also have tried to find a recording of her singing it... sadly to no avail.

I remember that performance exactly. It haunts me. I've searched to no avail. It is not the 1992 performance everyone seems to think you/we are talking about. Her hair was up. Her facial expression didn't change but that tear rolling down her cheek.... magic. Wikipedia makes note or a "particularly poignant television performance" of which there is no public recording. Such a shame. That performance is etched in my memory.
