People think that I'm a snob because I will leave a room or something because they are smoking but I really can't help it. I care what other people do to their bodies but it's their choice not mine. When people smoke and I recieve second hand smoke, it then becomes my choice. Okay enough of my soap box. I'm getting down now I promise!

| posted: 10/27/2003 at 1:05:34 PM ET Neither did I until opening night of Gypsy. That was one night that I did go to the stage door with about a million other people. I think we all wanted to see Bernadette come out on her night of triumph. Anyway, she was obviously getting ready and probably talking to a million people in her dressing room so Michael waited by the stage door for quite some time and even walked around Shubert Alley and he was smoking. I also saw a picture of her (on one of the photo sites (wireimage or something) at the party afterwards and he was in the background with a cigarette in his hands.
Like I said, I'm assuming he doesn't smoke around her (he WAS in the alley not in her dressing room) and they have obviously worked it out somehow.
I had just never heard those quotes about her being so against smoking so it struck me as funny that she is now married to someone who smokes at least some of the time.

He talks about how nice and sweet and genuine she is, and then says something about how maybe she doesn't like people boozing around her, but he didn't know that because she never said anything to him when he did it on the set. Apparently he was a very drinker at that time. Back then TV Guide published longer, more in-depth articles.

Reminds me of Leslie Nielson in Airplane with the lines about "What a day to give up smoking, drinking,..etc." Later addition: Of course it was Lloyd Bridges as the air traffic controller, not Leslie Nielsen. Sorry for the dumb mistake, and here I was, complaining about all the errors in newspapers. Mea Culpa.

But maybe it was tension and he was nicely dealing with it away from her. Though just the fact that he seems to be such a health nut is also surprising but hey, there are lots of doctors out there that smoke. We all have our little flaws.

From: Alabama | posted: 10/27/2003 at 6:36:26 PM ET I could not be married to a smoker! It gets everywhere and you can't get rid of it! My mom smokes and she won't do it when I'm there but everything I have comes home smelling like smoke when I get home. But as long as she's ok with it, there's no problem. I do find it strange that health conscious people do things like that though. Funny story...my stepmother had boutght some $10 deodorant because it didn't have any aluminum in it like other deodorants(aluminum has been known to cause breast cancer). Anyways, I then made fun of her for wasting her money when she smoked.

Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 10/27/2003 at 11:37:33 PM ET I was out there waiting opening night too! I think my friend and I stayed because we wanted to applaud Peters once more and show our support for her and the show no matter what the reviews might be. Of course, the reviews, the most important ones anyway turned out great, but we didn't know that at the time since the only one I'd read before going to the theater was the mixed one from Newsday.
I did wonder after hearing the ecstatic screams coming from the stage after the curtain was finally lowered, if they hadn't gotten a rave in the Times. But that being my first opening night, I wasn't sure that all casts didn't scream like that after their performance.
It's funny but from what I saw that night, it never occured to me that Michael might smoke. It looked to me like he took a cigarette from someone's packet that was at the stage door and was playing with it pretending to smoke. But then I was talking to my friend and watching all the other people so if he went and actually lite up, I wouldn't have noticed.

From: tonawanda,n.y. | posted: 10/29/2003 at 11:33:20 PM ET I recently retired from working at Roswell Park Cancer Center and I know that non-smokers inhale one- fourth of a smoker's toxins! I am truly concerned for Bernadette,as these toxins could definitely affect her vocal cords as well as her lungs! Damn cigarettes!!
To the loveliest lady of song!
You will keep on giving me joy forever...
