Okay here's my two cents...
First of all, you should never believe rumors on a message board at all. Chances are they aren't true and most likely (like someone said earlier) posted by someone who wants to piss someone else off. With that said, there are several reasons I think that this rumor isn't true. I'm no expert but I'm using my intuition here.

1) Bernadette signed a contract. Like I said before, I'm no expert in this field, but isn't the purpose of a contract to bind you to fullfilling its requirements when you sign to do a show? Isn't there something in the rule book that says you can't get out of a contract?

2) She did Annie Get Your Gun for two years. Now Rose is the most demanding role out there, and yes it will eventually wear someone down from doing it 8 shows a week, but really..Bernadette has put far too much effort into this show to throw all that away and only do the show for 6 months.

3) (Someone also pointed this out earlier) Bernadette has an unusual connection to this show. She loves it and you can tell she does.

4) How can she get out of the contract when they are selling tickets under the assumption that she will be in the show? People come from all over the country to see her. They pay for air fare, hotel stay, food, etc. They would HAVE to give some sort of notice before she all of a sudden stops doing the show, wouldn't they?

5) She knows the negative press she'd receive from this. If you thought the stuff before was bad, I can't imagine what Michael Reidel would write now. The press would have a field day and she'd live with that the rest of her career.

6) Why end a good thing? No, the show did not win any Tony awards (Even though it should have), but tickets are selling and last time I checked at a 98% rate. The cast recording was at number 10 on amazon.com! There were tons of people who went to the signing and tons of people who go back to see the show over and over again.

Okay..anyway. Even if she were to end her contract, she must have good reason. I respect her decision either way because she knows what's best for her and she deserves any break she wants.

I can not comprehend WHY people start such rumors, or how anyone could derive any satisfaction from spreading such gossip. I chalk it up to some leftover remnants of the vitriol which was heaped upon the show in previews by Reidel and other naysayers during the show's previews. The show has been running officially for more than 4 full months, and Bernadette has missed ONE performance due to a planned absence because of her husband's surgery. The vultures who waited in vain for Bernadette and the production to bomb were sorely disappointed...now they must cling to the desperate hope that something will happen to end Bernadette's triumphant run. It's just so BIZARRE. I will bet any amount that Bernadette will not only fulfill her ENTIRE contract with GYPSY, but she will also extend for a period beyond her currently scheduled last performance on March 13, 2004. Think of the satisfaction we will all feel come March, at which time we can look back and realize this was just another DUMB rumor. The truth is, she has gotten even stronger in the role...she is sustaining this performance brilliantly, and solidifying the fact that this is one of the great performances.

This of course, does not include her absences in previews or right after the opening. She has been performing steadily since May 12th.

That was brilliantly said, Rob. Thanks for voicing what all of us know to be the real truth!

There are reasons why some people like to spread rumors. Some people take great pleasure in attacking others. There's also jealousy, too.

K guys. I'm planning a trip in February and also heard these unsubstantiated RUMORS. So I called the Schubert and told her that I was a fan coming all the way from Alabama just to see HER and wanted to know if she would be there. They said that she is scheduled till her contract runs out. So from the mouth of the theatre itself, she's not going anywhere right now!

Bump it with a trumpet!

I am sorry, I am the original thread starter, I couldn't remember my pword lol. anyway, I know that this is just a rumor and I wanted to know if anyone else had heard it, I wanted it to be proved or disproved. I didn't start it to piss anyone off lol, believe me I am a HUGE BP fan. I heard it on m.n forums and then posted a question @bwayworld.com so it may have been me you heard it from originally too. Thanks for your time.

Peace lvoe and hairgrease,

qpidsangel, I believe the rumor actually stared on All That Chat several weeks ago and has spread like wild fire eversince. So I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks for the The View reminder (what an awkward sentence).
