I asked the woman who sells souveniers at the theater if the programs will be available soon, and she said not for a while. My only thought on what might be taking so long is that they want to see how Gypsy does at the Tony's. Then they could incorporate wins into the program.

6 weeks!

Is that the average time it takes shows to produce their souvenir books? That would be almost 3 months after the opening.

Yes, it does take a while. They have to take the photos and produce it but they wait a bit to make sure the show will be around for a while. Otherwise it wouldn't be worth the very large investment to produce the programs. There was a recent high profile show that never got its programs - I think maybe Into the Woods (the revival).

Did the ITW revival not get a souvenir book? I saw the show late in the LA run and was underwhelmed, so never saw it in NY. However, after all of your descriptions of the way the performances in Gypsy evolved, I'm wondering now if Vanessa Williams gained more "oomph" and Mary Louise Burke learned to sing.

Speaking of souvenir books, does anyone have the Goodbye Girl book and if so, does your book have some pictures and captions that look like they were pasted in after the fact?

I think Vanessa Williams has a beautiful voice, but lacks a little in stage presence. I like her better in movies; but that could just be that she needs to develope a stage style.
I thought the revival was weird as far as choreography...but the scenery was much nicer.

Her stage presence or lack of surprised me when I saw the revival. With the favorable reviews she received after replacing Rivera in Spider Woman, I really was expecting her to command the stage more and have more pizzaz. But most of the performances were rather flat. Benanti was supposedly the best thing, but she was out when I saw it.

The scenery for the woods was wonderful, and I did like the way they book theme was carried throughout and of course Milky White stole the show.

Yeah, I liked the book theme too. It was much cuter than the original that started off with three scenes just up against a background. I loved the giant books in the revival. I also loved how they had 2 wolves instead of 1, and the 3 Little Pigs.

I think Vanessa's problem with the role of the witch was that she was going for all glamour and superiority. Bernadette had those things, but she has the ability to add humor to a role...which she did. Bernadette made me like the character, and Vanessa didn't.

I also liked that they added "Our Little World" and I thought that having the witch sing "Last Midnight" to the baby was a change that worked, but humor and emotion were definitely two crucial elements missing from Williams' performance that Peters had in spades.

The second time I saw the original Woods was not too long after it had opened, and the moment the curtain went up, you could tell that the audience wasn't with the show. Their attitude seemed to be, "Well Frank Rich didn't like it, so neither will we." The audience was sort of sitting on its hands but when Peters sang "Stay With Me," you could hear a pin drop and the audience came to life. Her performance of that number was the perfect combination of anger, hurt and imploring delivered with gut-wrenching beauty. One could see where Laurents would have started to envision Peters as a future Momma Rose.

i wish so badly that i could have seen the original into the woods, but i watch it all the time on dvd and video. i did, however, see the revival twice and just LOVED it! vanessa was no bernadette, but then again, maybe she grew into the role more if i saw it after you guys.

i LOVED the choice to make the last midnight into a creepy lullaby to the baby; it gave me chills.

i know i'm preaching to the choir here, but i completely agree that humor was needed to complete the role of the witch because it is not a lovable character really, but bernadette MADE it that way. and because bernadette created that role and was just perfectly fitted into it, there is no way that vanessa could compare. which is why i'm glad she did her own thing.

"stay with me" is chilling on tape, i can't even imagine what it was like live. this is what makes bernadette BERNADETTE...she FEELS! she doesn't just sing, she IS, she is BEING, and it becomes ACTING. the complex emotions she had, (and has) while singing is what we feel...

i dont even know how to describe and that's why i love this place...i dont really have to b/c you all just know what i'm talking about with bernadete...
