So who do you all think it will be... This is VERY diffictult... I haven't seen GYPSY yet but as for HAIRSPRAY.... Marissa isn't on much, not her fault... the scripts, but when she is on... Well, she WAS very good but she wasn't GREAT! You know what I mean? I've heard that Bernadette is really good of course... Another thing... Some people are saying that Bernadette will win because she's a veteran to theatre and a broadway "diva" (minus the bitchy part of the definition "diva")... But isn't anybody else worried that Marissa could win it cause she's new blood and new talent??? I dunno... I REALLY want Bernadette to win... Hope she does... What do you guys think???

It will be close, I think. Because it is a legend vs. a well received newcomer, both have very strong chances. I'm certainly hoping it will be Bernadette. I think she has the more Tony Award willing role in which she is giving a tony award winnning performance.

I hope it's Bernadette too...we know how much she's put into this and how phenomenal her performance is. I, however, am more worried about the 'politics' of the Tonys and am afraid with the recent absences and the buzz being generated from that (not that I'm with them mind you), that some may be inclined not to vote for her...I certainly hope I'm wrong though.

I have a question about how the Tonys work. With the Oscars, the actors, directors, writers, etc. get to vote in their categories and everyone gets to vote for best film, but aren't the Tonys different? Who exactly are the Tony voters? Are they producers, theatre owners, or what exactly? Also, by what dates do the votes have to be in, and do you have to prove you've seen every show that's nominated before being allowed to vote? I've always been confused about that, so any information would be appreciated.

Let's face it, the Tony's are completely political (as are all awards shows).
This can go either way:

Marissa, Pros: Well-received newcomer, great personality, great voice, lovable character portayal, "Big" girl...sorry, but it's true.

Cons: her competition is Bernadette Peters! They gave the Tony to a newcomer last year (Sutton Foster)...they may want to give it to a veteran this year.

Bernadette, Pros: She is a favorite leading lady, She is an amazing singer AND actress, she has gotten amazing reviews so far (with one or 2 exceptions), this (God I hope not) may be her swan song as far as Broadway shows, Rose is one of the toughest roles and she has done a great job portraying her!

Cons: She won a Tony for her last show, She has been out sick a lot (and the show hasn't been running very long), People tend to either love her or hate her (although I don't get how anyone could hate her).

And this can be either a pro or a con: The last 2 women who played Rose won the Tony.

Yes, exactly. It will be such a tough call because of the many factors you listed. At any rate, it will be exciting and nail biting suspence. But wouldn't we all just rather they decide now that Bernadette obviously deserves it more.

Too bad we're not on the Tony comittee
LOL I could be....I've seen almost every show on Broadway. and so have a few others who post here.

There is a really good chance that I will break the remote to my television if Bernadette doesn't win.

Bernadette will win. They won't give the Tony to a fat chick.

Hmmm, you may want to inform Jennifer Holiday about that...

Of course, Bernadette is going to win but I had to reply to the snotty comment.

If Bernadette does not win then I am going to boycott Broadway. ok, that is unrealistic but I will be mad.

Although I will not use the term "fat chick" because it's mean, I think the complete opposite of that anonymous person's response might happen. They may give it to Marissa because she's BIG, besides the fact that she is incredibely nice and a good singer; making it a Cinderella story for all of the large women on Broadway. It'll be like Cameryn Manheim at the Emmy's a few years ago.

But, like I said, we had the Cinderella story last year with Sutton......although I thought Sutton deserved to win....and Bernadette really deserves it this year.

I agree with Christine. Sutton really deserved it last year and Bernadette really deserves it this year. I'm basing my opinion of Marissa on her performances on TV that I've seen vs. seeing BP live and I may be a little, teeny, tiny bit biased in the direction of Bernadette. :-)

LOL It's true! Bernadette could have the worst role in theater history (hypothetically) and be bad in it (as if that could ever happen) and I would still want her to win. However, there is a difference between wanting her to win and knowing she deserves to win. I said in the beginning of previews that I didn't think she was deserving of the Tony for this role; but seeing her become comfortable and in turn phenominal with Rose, I have changed my mind immensly. Now, not only is she the best actress and singer on Broadway (playing the toughest role), but we have actually seen her grow with time and work for that Tony! Bernadette absolutely deserves to win....and I hate to see some new kid on the block win b/c of politics!

weight has nothing to do with talent, eventhough it seems to hinder a person's chances sometimes. marissa did a fantastic job in hairspray, however, if you want to talk tony worthy, its Bernadette all the way! not to take away from what Marissa did, but when you talk tony, you're not just talking about singing. Bernadette had the "acting" as well as the doubt surrounding her and she surpassed everyone's expectations (except those of us here, who never lost faith, of course). she deserves it 100%.
