I don't mean to be vulgar but Bernadette is an extremely sexy woman with an extremely sexy body and what have they done to her up until now on the stage at the Shubert - they have covered up what was supposed to be the sexiest Rose ever. But finally, yes finally, they have gotten her costumes right. The dress she wears in her final scene in Rose's Turn - it is still purple but not the dress you have seen in the pictures on the web. It is tight, form fitting and Lowwwwwwww cut! Now I understand why she wears that awful long sweater in Gypsy's dressing room. She is covering up the dress so you don't see it until she takes the sweater off. And when she sings the line "How about them eggrolls", well she actually shows off her "eggrolls" ;-) by pulling the neckline down even further. Finally you see that Gypsy, the stripper, doesn't fall far from the tree so to speak.

Tonight's performance was overcome by several technical problems that knocked everyone off a bit. They were really good but just not absolutely fantastic. Though many people who had seen it for the first time (unlike me, hee hee) probably didn't realize it. First during the last half of the overture, this really loud alarm went off and didn't turn off. I thought for sure it was the fire alarm. Needless to say when the overture was finished, the curtain did not go up. After several minutes of this alarm going off it finally stopped. Peter Lawrence, the assistant director and essentially the production stage manager, came to the front of the theater and announced they had no idea what the noise was and once they figured it out, they would start again. Well a few minutes later they started again. Marvin picked it up toward the end of the overture and about 20 seconds into it - once again the alarm went off. It was piercing. They figured out it was feedback from one of the speakers just under the mezz. So they turned that speaker off. It really didn't sound like feedback but an alarm but you could tell it was coming from the speaker. When the overture started for the third time (it was 8:15 by this time) and finally was able to finish, it got a huge applause. And everyone seemed psyched. But somewhere in the middle of the first act, the energy fell just a little. Then two different times, during quite quiet scenes, someone knocked something over backstage. And once both placards on the side of the stage didn't get changed so for one, very long scene it read two different locations. Bernadette's voice was a little scratchy. I'm sure she is still recovering from her illness. But she sounded great, despite that. She was able to sustain her long notes and really give it her all. The chemistry between Rose and Herbie was almost overwhelming. Lord you almost felt they were going to do it right there, the first time they met. Sorry for the vulgar image but I mean that in a good way. ;-)

Anyway, despite some flaws and a little lack of energy, the show is in excellent shape. Tammy Blanchard has come so far and so has Bernadette and now with the costumes in place, let's hope the critics and Tony voters are impressed too.

Thanks Moljul for the latest report. I can't wait til Wed. when I finally get to see it. I might even try to catch it more than once, but i doubt I'll be able to match your number of trips in the time I'm there. Also seeing Nine, MOLM, Hairspray, Movin' Out, and a few others so will hopefully see most of the current musical competition facing Gypsy.

It's too bad they had those glitches, cuz weren't there critics there tonight as well?

OOO, thanks for the update. Now I can't wait to see it again (I have tickets for this weekend). LOL Hopefully they worked out the little technicalities.

I purposely got tickets for the weekend after opening night because I want to see if the cast is more relaxed. I'm soooo excited now (even though I've already seen it a few times).

I can´t tell you how exciting it is to be reading this--here in Madrid! I feel like I´m there, in spirit if not in body.

Hola to all,

i was there last night as well, but it was my first time seeing it and WOW!!!! no words can describe it! the noise was funny, and the audience was great about it. no one made any comments that i heard and everyone applauded very loudly when the orchestra finally got through the oveture. bernadette is simply breathtaking! the chemistry was so hot between her and herbie that even from the balcony i felt it! (go, rush seats ) and rose's turn! that dress and when she showed mr. goldstone her own "egg roles" it was quite a moment because it could have been a very funny thing to do if she had done it another way, but the way she did it was so sad and disturbing and great. the silk (i think it was silk) dress just fell on her beautifully. tammy blanchard as well acted very well with quite a huge yet seemless transformation in just 3 hours from luise to gypsy rose lee. i can't wait to go again next week. also, i was quite happy that bernadette stayed to sign every autograph and take every picture. i didn't see or hear her when she was sick, but she seemed very well last night. also, has anyone heard anything about the cd release date? b/c i for one want it now!

Well for those of us sitting in the orchestra, directly behind the speaker, I wouldn't call the noise Funny! LOL People were literally holding their ears. Glad you enjoyed the show so much. I'm still so excited about it. There are a lot of positive comments on several theater boards now. I sure hope people (and most importantly critics and Tony voters) are able to forget the negative comments from the first previews. I think this production did a disservice to itself by not opening out of town and working through these things away from Broadway. They had to know everyone was going to criticize every little thing. But hey, what's done is done and now they seem to be wowing just about everyone.
