This is interesting, something I did not know:
"Q-- Were you the first musical talent to emerge in your family?

A-- Oh, no. My mother's brothers had a little orchestra and they played saxophone and clarinet. Her sister sang, and there was a lot of music in mother's family when she was growing up. My father played the piano by ear and never really took any lessons. So he always played music at home. My brother played piano. I took piano lessons, and was always studying.

Q-- Were the piano lessons a help to you later in musical theater?

A-- Yes. I never played well, but I certainly can read notes and that is a great boon for learning a song."
