I haven't read anything on this site about the revival of "Gypsy"
starring Patti Lapone! When did it open? Heard Patti sing "Some People"
the other night and thought it brassy and lacked conviction! Has
anyone seen it yet? If Patti wins an Oscar I'll be completely distraught!

There's a reason why you haven't read anything about it here. You know that old saying "if you can't say anything nice..." It opened a couple of months ago and will undoubtedly close shortly. I agree about LuPone being brassy and convictionless and also share your sentiments about being completely distraught if she's rewarded with a Tony.

i hate to burst everyone's bubble here, but i have no doubt in my mind she will win that Tony. i don't agree with her Rose on many levels, but she has gotten some RAVE reviews. i have been keeping up on it. if she doesn't win, it will shock the pants off me. i didn't really like her Rose (or her) when i first saw videos. but now that i am watching it more and more, she is starting to grow on me. i hear that she is doing "rose's turn" at the awards tomorrow.

if she doesn't win, it will be the curse of the mama rose 2.0. Bernadette was still robbed that Tony. but that's a whole other story.

anyways, as for the production of Gypsy 2008, i LOVE it. Laura Benanti makes that show. everyone is just great. now i haven't even seen the show live, but i watch the videos and i know the people playing the characters pretty well. i hope it wins a lot of awards tomorrow night. not just because of this cast, but because i love the show itself regardless who is playing..ect. but they also have a lot of great competition.

off topic a little but this should have been in the theatre chat section. oh well *shrugs*
edit: and there IS a thread about the production of Gypsy with Lupone in that section. it's alright though. this one could involve our views of the tony performance too.

Actually, word on the street is that she will be performing "Everything's Coming Up Roses" tomorrow night, NOT "Rose's Turn."

hmm..that's not what i heard. interesting. that would make more sense though because i think they want laura and boyd on the stage as well. they are nominated this year for gypsy. and i think patti's "rose's turn" will scare many people. she is better off doing "everything's coming up roses." it's a little less scary.

i think you are right though. sorry about that.

Actually, I haven't seen it on Broadway with her, but I did see it at City Center last Summer and it was really very good.

Bernadette was not the first actress to play Rose. She is not the last one either. The wonderful thing about a show and a character is the amount of room open for interpretation.

BTW, If Patti wins the OSCAR...I'll be shocked as well. LOL

And you're not bursting anyone's bubble. I, along with everyone else here, am aware of her many rave reviews and the fact that she is the odds on favorite to win. However history is strewn with odds on favorites in every realm of endeavor coming home empty handed. If she wins, she wins. I don't hate the woman as a performer (completely). I was disappointed when she lost for Sweeney Todd a few years ago. And, don't forget, she was favored to win that year too.

I saw LuPone attempting Rose the summer before last in a completely different production of Gypsy--different director, different cast. She's probably better now, but she was not terribly impressive then. Very heavy handed, extemely predictable. "Look at how loud I can belt! Doncha just love me?" Same old, same old. Nothing fresh or different brought to bear. She's a Rose for people who don't want to be provoked by a thoughtful, subtle interpretaion that brings new elements into play. For people who already know what they like and only want to see something that they're comfortable with because it's been that way for years. For the people who said Bernadette was "miscast" because there had never been a Rose like hers before. And for the kids who've grown up thinking that singing is all about who can sustain a note the loudest and the longest.

And, last but not least, Patti LuPone has no sense of humor and no understanding of how to use it effectively on stage. At all.

The End

P.S. Just my opinion!

This production is coming to the West End next year, complete with Patti.

I've seen her before, she couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag.

I didn't mean it in a bad way. I am not a fan of Patti Lupone myself. I didn't know you guys were aware of all the reviews and things that were happening with this production. And i agree with what you just said on most points. And yes, there have been many upsets at the Tony's in the past, so there is always a chance she won't win. However, the odds are in her favor. It's going to be interesting to see, that's for sure.

Anyway, i am not one to cause any trouble online. So i'm sorry if i offended you. coming down to it, i agree with Christina about the part of Rose being open to a large amount of interpretation. i kind of like the way the both were very different with this character. in some ways Patti annoys me, but i actually like watching her in some songs.

no matter what, i am rooting for Gyspy and Sunday In The Park With George this year.

Never any offense! Nothing I enjoy more than a good, lively debate.

And, yeah, we guys are aware of a lot of things going on in the world.

I'm pulling for Xanadu. ha ha I'm not even joking. I can't remember the last time I just had FUN at a show like that.

I think Sunday may get best revival.
It certainly SHOULD get best revival.

Best Lead Actress in a musical is tough. If Patti does win, I hope she keeps her word and sings the National Anthem. Admittedly it would be bitter-sweet to see her win.
Kelli and Jenna should definitely not be counted out. I would not call this season a lock.

Laura Benanti is probably going to get Best Supporting. I wish it was Andrea Martin. Then again, I wanted her to win for Oklahoma a few years ago and she lost...to Harriet Harris, so that was kind of fun regardless. Totally the year Bernadette hosted. Best year ever IMO. Okay, done with the ranting of random trivia. lol

random trivia...one of my favorite things...along with the ranting thereof.
