Well, technically, I suppose he was Prime Minister of London, and England even. But really he was PM of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland too, the entire UK in fact...

Our new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, is in New York addressing the UN today. Best to keep Bernadette away from him.

Well now I feel like a dope as I believe I knew his powers did extend that far. So his official title is Prime Minster of the UK or do they list the countries separately? I guess I think of it like Queen Elizabeth II. She is called the Queen of England, isn't she, but she is also the Queen of Scotland, right?

I usually hear Gordon Brown, or whomever, referred to as the British Prime Minister but I thought the term British really only referred to England, Wales and Scotland - not Ireland.

Our new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, is in New York addressing the UN today. Best to keep Bernadette away from him.

Something tells me Bernadette would have her usual effect she has on all men - he'll get tongue tied and tell her he's the Prime Minister of Antartica.

"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990

I think they just say that for short. She's Elizabeth II of England and Elizabeth I of Scotland. She's Queen and Head of State of the UK, and also Queen of around 16 other Commonwealth countries, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc.

I'm certainly not what you might call a monarchist, but I do like the idea of a non-elected Head of State -- it takes the ultimate power away from those pesky politicans.

re: N.Ireland, the UK means the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Well then with the tradition of titles that long, I'm going to go ahead and support Bernadette's right to call Brown (or Blair) the Prime Minister of England! LOL Though not London!

Yeah, Gordon Brown, being a typical red-blooded Scot, would probably tell her to call him anything she likes as long as she calls him.
