In correspondence to a few of the threads you all have posted on
Sweeney Todd[[the movie]], now that the movie has been out in the theaters
what are your thoughts on the casting.
Personally I thought it was suprisingly good. Not what i expected.
Not on par with theaters versions but still very good.

Good Night All.

I loved it, especially Depp and Bonham-Carter, it was a nice compliment to the theatrical casting choices that have been made in the past, and I'm SO glad they didn't try to just copy the original production. I still would have loved to have seen Bernadette as Mrs. Lovett though (and there were moments in the film where Helena looked so much like Bernadette I wondered if she had been considered for the role.)

The only real complaint I had was the singing, it was quieter and breathier, which for me didn't work as well with the rich score (which itself was somewhat neutered) but the cast overall were good enough actors it still worked for me.

I still love the old PBS version best though, with Angela Lansbury as Lovett and George Hearn as Sweeney. But that was the first time I'd seen it so maybe I'm biased.

I remember saying here ages ago that Helena sometimes looked very much like Bernadette, I'm glad it's not just me and that someone agrees. I really like Johnny Depp and his talents but I found his vocals a bit of a cheat. It just seemed like an impersonation of David Bowie singing Sweeney Todd.
