So naturally I had to go there and test out Bernadette Peters.
The first song played was a maudlin ditty called "Beautiful Sadness" by irritating seventies cabaret singer Jane Olivor. This did not sound promising so I skipped ahead. Other performers provided included Carly Simon, Barbra Streisand (late-model Streisand butchering Sondheim, not good early Streisand), Daniel Rodriguez (never heard of him), Helen Reddy (!), Josh Groban, Sarah Brightman, and Rufus Wainwright. In other words, no one I would ever dream of listening to. I felt like I was trapped in some "easy listening" hell.
You can ask why these particular songs and performers were suggested, so I did. The explanation given was that they featured "acoustic sonority, meandering melodic phrasing, use of a string ensemble, major key tonality, and many other similarities" in common with Bernadette Peters's music.
Has anyone else ever tried this site and had better luck with it? I'll probably go back some time and experiment with some other singers just to see if the recommendations will be any more accurate than these were--which was not at all.
