From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Wisconsin)

April 24, 2005 Sunday

BYLINE: JAN UEBELHERR, Staff, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"Pet projects abound in 'Animal House'

The domestic life of dogs, cats, ferrets and other critters gets its due in "Animal House Style: Designing a Home to Share With Your Pets" ($19.95, paperback, Bulfinch Press).

Pet-loving journalist Julia Szabo, who writes the "Pets" column for the Sunday New York Post, combines her love of animals and her background in design (she's written for House Beautiful, Homestyle, The New York Times and Travel & Leisure) in this photo-rich book.

Szabo visits the homes of famous "animal people," including Todd Oldham,Bernadette Peters, Eleanor Mondale and the late Spalding Gray, where pointers on living with pets are revealed (a hint: the floor is just about the whole world for dogs, so make it nice for them, practical for you).

Pillows, puppy beds, raised and bejeweled feeding bowls, and cat-friendly climbing places are featured in this book. For odor problems, consider a splash of "Oh My Dog" perfume, a pet-safe fragrance that was "designed to reinforce the animal-human bond through aromatic massage."

Animal lover Mary Tyler Moore offers a brief foreword, writing that the book is sure to "inspire house-proud animal lovers to welcome pets into their homes."

It would seem they already have, with a reported 64 million cat owners and 62 million dog owners in America.

This book seeks to make the little beasts as comfortable as humanly possible."

That sounds like the book I bought for some friends after they bought their first home and got a their first dog. I had the hardcover version, but I don't think there was anything in there about Bernadette.

I looked at the book at Barnes and Noble--no photographs of Bernadette/dogs, no text or quotes that I could find. In the acknowledements at the end both Bernadette and Stacy Shubb (FIDO/NYC) are mentioned.

I took out a library copy and scoured through it for references. Bernadette is, indeed, mentioned in one paragraph. It's on page 87, in the chapter on fabrics. Here's what it says:

"Then again, for some people, outsmarting pets by means of shrewd fabric choice is the whole point. After one of her dogs shredded the sofa, actress Bernadette Peters told me she planned to recover it in Sunbrella, a weather-resistant fabric designed for outdoor furniture upholstery. "But," I protested, "your dogs won't like the way it feels." Bernadette just chuckled with that beautiful, Tony-award winning voice of hers. "I know," she replied--and I swear you could hear her wink."

Karen thanks for finding that little passage. I guess I should have thumbed through that book more carefully before I gave it to my friend. j/k One of her dogs chewed up half her couch too but I don't think she recovered it in Sunbrella.

Thanks, Karen--you have more patience than me! Of course, I was juggling a latte, the book, my handbag, while sitting in a small armchair, reading a book I had no intention of buying.
