Yes, we had a nice chat about Bobbie's Girl when it first aired on Showtime.

I agree with some of the posters that the script wasn't very well developed (sorry if I mis-represented anyone) but that she, as usual, rose above her material and was quite funny (and, to me, absolutely heartbreakingly vulnerable and affecting).

lol that's s funny that you say that because when Love Actually was coming out, we were all saying, "The movie has that cute little boy from Bobbie's Girl in it."

Guys, come on! Bobbie's Girl was whack! It was a really disappointing Bernadette move for me. I love her to death, but, does anyone agree???

I would guess that since you were disappointed, you're probably a relatively new fan. One thing you'll learn is that when Bernadette makes a movie, aside from a handful of exceptions, it invariably ranges from (at best) mediocre to (at worst) one of the biggest dogs of all time. Long-time fans are so used to it that nothing is ever a disappointment to us anymore. We're just glad to see her in anything. Of course, Bernadette herself is always wonderful, managing to create subtly nuanced, full-blooded characters out of seemingly nothing. She's always very different too, each character unique and distinct--exhibiting an extraordinary acting range that is usually overlooked. "Bobbie's Girl" wasn't particularly good material, but hey, it could have been worse. Much, much worse. At least it was superior to dreck/drivel like "Prince Charming", "Let It Snow", or the abominable "It Runs in the Family". This is nothing new. The seventies brought us gems like "Vigilante Force", while the eighties included beloved classics like "Tulips", "Heartbeeps", and "Slaves of New York". Don't get me wrong. I own every single one of them, watch them, and even enjoy them, but yeah, to use your term (which was a new one to me) they're definitely "whack".

I totally agree with Karen. Aside from Pennies from Heaven and The Jerk, most of Bernadette's movies are truly terrible (aside from her specific performance, of course, which is always fantastic). I must admit, I liked Bobbie's Girl. My roommate (who is not a BP fan) thought the whole thing was pretty bad though. I thought it was really well-acted by all of them. And I got the feeling that Bernadette played a character very similar to herself (judging from interviews and Regis stints). Does anyone else agree?

Okay. lol I feel like a dork now because I actually like that movie. But oh well.

Her movies that I actually enjoy:
Bobbie's Girl
Annie
It Runs In the Family
The Jerk
Pennies From Heaven
Pink Cadillac
Impromtu
Cinderella
The Last Best Year (when I'm in the mood for a tear jerker).

The rest of them are kind of like, I saw them once or twice, I own them all, but rarely ever watch them. And of course when I say her movies, I'm not including voice-over roles or Broadway shows that were taped.

Her movies are certainly better than some of the trash out these days. And I must give her kudos because I think she doesn't care about the glamour, fame, glitz of film--I think she's really doing something she believes in and supports!(Ie;actually meeting with the unknown director who faxed her LONG script)...I think she wanted to do things that are artistically fulfilling. The may not be, by our standards, the greatest films-but each of them makes a statement. I personally LOVED It Runs In the Family and think the movie was HIGHLY overlooked--it was a very touching and warm film that I personally call one of my favorites. Besides Bernadette was born a true artist-not some Hollywood big shot who will fade out eventually. Come on guys lets give the star some support here. But I do understand we all have different tastes, so I'm not trying to step on any toes.

Absolutely agree--very well put. I don't want to step on any toes either. I may have been a bit tactless in my comments; taste is very personal. I do agree that Bernadette tries to do work that is different and interesting. The thing is I have the feeling she's not always offered the film work that she deserves. Not sure why--possibly producers stereoptype her as strictly a theatre performer. It's true she's a theatre legend, but she's also a brilliant film actress when given the chance. Well, her career isn't over yet by a long shot, so who knows what's next.

Bobbie's Girl had good potential,IMO. I think it had too many storylines going on at once-for instance, there could have been enough drama with the child entering their life and the child adjusting to their life without the cancer storyline. Bobbie's brother wasn't necessary either. The acting was fine-all three were lovely,in my view-but it was a little too much for a television movie.

But yeesh,I agree-I rarely watch her movies. I finally watched my Sondheim DVD collection, and just wept at Sunday in the Park with George. But I was in a pretty emotional state to begin with at the time,so that added to it,I'm sure.

I vaguely remember David-I watched it when it first aired, but it wasn't because of her. I remember when David Rothenberg was burned by his father-that was in the mid 80s (his father,BTW,was released in 1991)

Jenn, Do you mean Bailey's brother wasn't necessary? Bobbie's brother wasn't exactly in the movie.

Come on guys lets give the star some support here.

Re-read the posts--I'd say all of us who posted are giving her tremendous support--our point being that, despite the quality of the vehicle, Bernadette shines in anything she does.

There's nothing wrong with saying that some of her movies are bad-whack (whatever the hell that is)-or mediocre-that's opinion.

The fact though, is that we are all 100% behind her in whatever she does-we see her plays, concerts and movies, buy the videos/DVDs, and contribute to her causes.

(For heaven's sake, Chip said that he liked her in Tulips--now THAT's support
)

Jean, you crack me up! You are the most direct, plain-spoken person around. If you were a politician, you'd be John McCain or Howard Dean or maybe even Harry Truman. Thanks for your comments. And Chip, I love her performance in Tulips also. I'm always embarrassed to recommend it, because the movie itself is so jaw-droppingly low budget, amateurish, and incoherent. However her performance as a woman with bipolar disorder is astonishingly on target. Again, there are those mixed qualities of funny and heartbreaking that have been mentioned before. Just miraculous, considering the abysmal context.
