Did anyone go to Gypsy last night and stay for the post performance discussion?

Yes. It was absolutely hysterical last night. A good percentage of the cast stayed, including Bernadette.

Talk back 3/24

Here is what I remember…

I don’t really remember the order but here ya go…

Someone asked about the audition process. Matt Bauer answered first.. he got the part from an open call. Then Kate Buddeke told how she flew in from Chicago for the audition. At first they did not want her to sing.. to which Brooks Ashmanskas responds.. They said.. PLEASE GOD don’t sing! But she did eventually sing I’m Just a Girl That Can’t Say No.. that brought some amusing comments from the cast. And she had a dance audition, which she thought would lose her the part. But they had her back for a third, and it obviously went well. John shared his audition story. He got out of the elevator before he went in and met Bernadette. She said to him.. you look like a Herbie. Then when they were doing the Chinese Restaurant scene she put her hand down on his and said to Sam Mendes.. look we are already touching!

Someone asked if being an actor was a hard life. One person said.. are you kidding we have the whole day off and don’t have to be here until 7:30. Some people, like Kate, mentioned they are not from NY so that was hard. But for the most part they all consider themselves VERY lucky to be on Broadway. And that like other jobs, like maybe the military, you have to make sacrifices.

Someone asked if you had to be equity to audition. Matt Bauer took that and she he was not equity when he auditioned, in fact may of them weren’t. So quite a few got their cards on this show.

The kids were asked if they go to school and what time they have to get up tomorrow. Jordan said he is home schooled. Several others attend performing art schools. And Andrew said he had to be up and at school by 8:30. BP’s face was hysterical with that comment! In fact most of the cast was horrified by the early hour!

Someone asked how BP keeps up her stamina and her voice in shape. She responded she does not talk on the phone. She doesn’t go to restaurants where it is loud so she doesn’t have to talk over people. She doesn’t smoke. And she gets to the theatre early and warms up both her speaking voice and singing voice.

Someone asked what happens when you get sick. BP responded.. well you sometimes have to miss the show. And sometimes you go on. But it is hard with a show like this because of the huge vocal demands. And then someone interjected that dancers a lot of the time go on when they are injured, it is just part of the life.

Someone asked how it was to join the cast as a replacement, and what was that rehearsal process like. Gayton Scott, the new Electra took that one. She said she got 5 rehearsals, and she was scared to death the first night she went on. But she said the cast was so supportive and no one said.. you suck. Then she said.. except Brooks. He said I was horrible. He responded.. and that was tonight. Then he began to BOO!!! It was very funny!!

Someone asked BP what her favorite role is she has played. She said, she is usually very lucky and it is what she is doing at the time. She said GYPSY has been such an amazing experience for her and she is just loving it. So she would say Gypsy. But she did admit a certain love for both Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods.

Someone asked about the mics, and how they project their voices, and do they have to speak a lot louder than their normal speaking voices. Brooks Ashmanskas responds by shouting.. WHAT’D YA SAY?? Then BP says.. that she basically uses her normal speaking voice with the mic.

Then someone asked about the most embarrassing moments on stage. In almost perfect unison the cast said.. BROOKS. He said well, I think that embarrassing moments happen off stage. On stage you excel and don’t mess up. The cast seemed amused by his seriousness.

That is what I remember…

This is from the Gypsy site ("www.gypsythemusical.com"), Press area, which explains it pretty well, I think:

"GYPSY BEGINS WEDNESDAY NIGHT TALKBACKS Q&A’s WITH CAST MEMBERS FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY EVENING SHOWS

Cast members from the acclaimed revival of the legendary Broadway musical GYPSY will participate in talkbacks following all Wednesday night performances, starting on Wednesday, March 17th at the Shubert Theatre (225 West 44th Street).

Theatergoers attending the performance will be able to ask questions to the cast of the production. The talkbacks will be held after all Wednesday evening performances for the next few weeks. "

And, because I've learned to link, from playbill.com:
