Mary Tyler Moore is in a Dick Van Dyck Show reunion on May 11 @ 9:00pm on CBS. Carol is on a Carol Burnett Show reunion (not sure that's it, exactly) on May 12, @10:00pm on CBS.

I did enjoy the many cameos including Terry Simms, MTM's personal assistant, as the piano player in the dance studio as well as Frank Adamo, who played many bit parts in the old DVD show and was once Dick Van Dyke's personal assistant, as Alan Brady's butler.

Since DVD is my all-time favorite show, I was a little apprehensive, but this was not at all disappointing to me. Millie and Sally were hilarious, and everyone seemed totally in character. I loved Frank Adamo's cameo too, but I didn't even know about Terry Sims, so thanks for mentioning that. This was completely in a different league from that not so good Mary/Rhoda reunion they had a few years ago. So glad I thought to tape this, because I know I'll rewatch.

But when they went to the cheesey segways to the clips, well that's when the overall rating went down for me. I wish they had been able to just write an episode without segwaying to the clips. I would have enjoyed those clips in a montage at the end.
Karen, it's one of my favorite shows too. I have all of them on videotape from about 10 years ago. One of these days I'll get the DVD collection which I'm sure is in much better shape than my videos.
My favorite episode is probably the Xmas episode with Rob and Laura as dancing Santas. But Long Nights Journey into Day is a close second. Man, I wish they made TV like that still.

At least they included clips from your two favorite episodes, as well as my two favorites "The Ghost of A. Chantz" and "Coast to Coast Big Mouth". "Long Night's Journey Into Day" is a great one because it focused on the interplay between Laura and Millie, always one of my favorite aspects.
But don't get me started--I can spend hours analysing DVD episodes. I used to think there could be a good scholarly book written on the subject of food and drink references in that series and what they said sociologially about 1960s American culture. I'm almost positive there was never a single episode that didn't mention some kind of food. I assume it was a Carl Reiner obsession.
Okay, that's it. I'm cutting myself off now.

From: Arizona | posted: 5/15/2004 at 12:57:54 AM ET It was fun seeing everyone back in character again but I have to agree that I would have preferred it if less time had been devoted to the clips. As fans we have all seen the old shows and would rather see what the Petries and their friends are up to today. I also thought maybe they should have ended the show in character but I guess they couldn't in order for Ray and Mary to pull off that little gag Overall I really enjoyed it...they took a risk doing this type of reunion and it worked
Unfortunately I missed Carol's reunion due to an annoying class, does anyone know if it will re-air??

| posted: 5/15/2004 at 3:50:30 PM ET It was cute. I was quite impressed by Mary Tyler Moore's dancing in the present. I assume it's been quite some time since she actually did any dancing, but she did a good job. And I had no idea she could sing! I have watched DVD from time to time, but always seemed to have missed the musical episodes.
lol The botox joke was cheezy, but funny.
I was most ammused by seeing what the old living room looked like in color. Funny how it's never what one would imagine. Very pretty though.
I also liked the Mary and Rhoda movie. lol I wish I knew where my tape was with that.

| posted: 5/15/2004 at 4:12:43 PM ET Oh my goodness. You have missed some of the best Dick Van Dyke episodes if you have missed the ones where they perform. She was the star of the famous or should I say infamous failure of a musical, Holly Golightly which was based on the movie, Breakfast at Tiffanys. If you ever get to the Museum of Television and Radio, be sure to watch the special, Dick Van Dyke and the Other Woman. It stars Dick and Mary in a variety hour special which was responsible for MTM getting her own show and it showcases both MTM and DVD as great song and dance performers. Plus after the Mary Tyler Moore Show, MTM did a couple of poorly received variety shows. She was trying to do something very close to the Carol Burnett Show except for the fact that the genre really wasn't popular anymore and also, they had really lousy writers. Several of those episodes are also at the museum. There are tons of folks on that show you would recognize except they are really young - David Letterman, Michael Keaton and I'm blanking on the rest of them.
I know Mary danced a lot as exercise until the mid 80s, at least so she probably keeps up a bit on it but I agree, she looked great.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 5/15/2004 at 4:37:36 PM ET Moljul, I was about to mention Breakfast at Tiffany's, but you beat me to it. Those variety shows of Mary's were so bad they were embarrassing. It was a relief when they were quickly cancelled. Another one of the talented young performers she had as regulars was Swoosie Kurtz, but as you say, the writing was terrible. The thing about Mary Tyler Moore, for me, is that, yes, she can sing and dance, but she doesn't look comfortable doing it. She looks like she's working really hard at something she's been studying for years, but there's just no natural flair. She looks nervous, and that always makes an audience nervous. But she's had such a great career specializing in other stuff that it really dosn't matter; at least she had the nerve to try it.

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 5/17/2004 at 9:55:48 AM ET My TV listing has both specials repeating Saturday night (May 22) back to back on CBS.
I missed the Carol special (was traveling), and fell asleep during the VanDyke show -- when the clips started. I too was hoping for a what-are-Rob-and-Laura-doing-now show. I can watch the old show on reruns (still more entertaining that 95 percent of what's on now).

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 5/17/2004 at 1:06:42 PM ET I noticed when I was watching the credits for the DVD special that even though it was broadcast on CBS, TVLand was involved with producing it too. It just occurred to me that maybe they insisted on including so many clips as a kind of promo or commercial for the series reruns that they show. Sort of in hopes that they would entice younger viewers to tune in to TVLand later.
