Encouraging quote from Lapine ...
The warm buzz and audience response at Studio 54 is thus gratifying to Lapine. “I’m kind of amazed that it’s in this 1,000-seat theater and people are standing up and cheering,” he marvels. “That’s not what they did 20 years ago, to say the least.”

I've read comments similar to this before and it still continues to astound me. This was a show definitely ahead of its time. I heard several comments from audience members when I attended the show. Some had seen the original and remembered barely being able to sit through it. They weren't trashing the original but just stating they weren't old enough or prepared for what the show was and therefore couldn't appreciate it at the time. Isn't it funny that this show had a similar reaction that Seurat's own paintings had. Though I'm glad the creators of this art are still alive to see it accepted.

"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990

"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987

I think the thing about "SITPWG" is you either love it or hate. I actually know some people who find it "tuneless", and those are people who really love West End/Broadway shows and the Theatre in general. I even have a friend who adores Bernadette as much as I do - but I couldn't possibly persuade him to watch the DVD with me, -- trust me, I've tried!

I have the Original Cast Recording on my iPod mini as well as the complete audio from the DVD. I've even transferred the DVD of the entire show to my vidPod, so I can watch and listen whenever I feel like it. It's no exageration to say that I have been known to sit in a train on the tube getting all teared up while listening to it. I find so many parts of it unbearably moving. And yet other people just find it boring. Thank heavens we're not all the same.

For me, the best thing about seeing this revival is that it has made me appreciate the original cast recording even more. I never noticed how transdendant the song "Beautiful" was before seeing it staged. Now I love it most both in the OCR and the current revival. I do admit that I have the London recording but I don't listen to it. The voices just aren't unique enough for me to stray from the original, plus it lacks the glorious lush orchestration of the original.

I haven't put the London Cast recording on my iPod mainly because I want to hear Bernadette's voice rather than Jenna's ... now, if I could only change Mandy's voice into Daniel's I'd be a happy bunny.

The London cast recording was made before they even had a chance to go into rehearsal.

I suppose I always had a fantasy of how I would play Dot because I’ve played her in my front room in my head for years, so I had an idea of what I wanted to do with her. But I didn’t know what I was going to do with Marie, and if I could go and record it again, I would do her over again. I had no idea what I was going to do with her when I recorded the album, and it’s nothing to do with what I did with her in the end! JR

Good reviews for the production and I think Jenna and Daniel will be pretty chuffed with their reviews as well. Jenna being called "a marvel" and "exquisite" ... wow!

Brantley agrees with us in his Times review: "...it will always be Mr. Patinkin’s and Ms. Peters’s voices I hear in my head when I recall the songs."

And then he immediately goes on to say ...

Sometimes, though, it’s easier to understand what a person is saying when he whispers into your ear instead of yelling at you from across a room.

And that, in a nutshell, is why I prefer Daniel Evans to Mandy Patinkin.
