Okay so I got this idea from Broadwayworld.com and thought it was interesting. The first show that came to mind was "The Goodbye Girl". It lasted for such a short amount of time(3/4/1993 - 8/15/1993)info from ibdb.com. Anyways, though I never saw it on Broadway, I LOVE the music and think it has a great comedic touch to it.

Quick question: do you mean shows that Bernadette was in, or just worthy shows that failed in general?

Anything, BP related or not. "The Goodbye Girl" was just the first one I thought of.

"Anyone Can Whistle"--1964--9 performances, 12 previews

"Mack and Mabel"--1974--66 performances, 5 previews on Broadway (plus a cross-country preview tour)

I saw them both, would like very much to see each again. M&M is my favorite Jerry Herman score and ACW is very strange but also has a great score.

Definitely agree with Jean's choices.

Two of my favorite cast albums are "House of Flowers" and "The Grass Harp." Gorgeous scores, but(I'm guessing)unworkable books. Still, you'd think something could be done to fix them up for restaging. Interestingly, they're both based on Truman Capote material, which I guess is just a coincidence since he's not one of my favorite writers or anything.

This is a good question--I'll try and think of some others.

There are several, but Parade tops the list for me.

Lost in the Stars (I *wish* Patti LuPone had sung the title song straight in her recorded concert-she sings part of the title song beautifully and gives lie to anyone who says she's overbearing and a cold presence, but then warps into Norma Desmond's final lines, and gives credence to anyone who says she is prone to histrionics. I didn't see the concert,so maybe I'm missing something in that number.),Ragtime (I know everybody says that, but that's one recording that I never tire of),and My Favorite Year (fantastic opening number, and a great number for the two lead women) are there too. And Side Show. I'm not saying these shows are perfect-some have/had significant problems IMO,and three (Side Show,Parade, and Ragtime) also went through external problems that contributed to their demise (I know of Side Show's problems, but I can't help but like the show very much.)

Does anyone remember "Goblin Market?" Polly Penn's musical based on the Christina Rossetti poem was fairly successful off-Broadway in the eighties. It's too small-scale for Broadway, but is such a haunting piece that it deserves to be better known. More recently, Michael John LaChiusa's "The Wild Party" wasn't nearly as successful as it should have been. And a show that I think is just a lot of fun is Joshua Rosenblum's "Fermat's Last Tango."

AH! Caroline, or Change!! What a freaking amazing show. Everyone should have had the opportunity to see this show. I think they are doing it in California and I also heard a rumor that it would be filmed for HBO. I can only hope, because this show is so incredible it needs to be preserved forever.

I don't know whether as a show "A Time for Singing" deserves another chance, but I certainly have enjoyed the cast recording over the years. The show was a musical version of How Green Was My Valley and starred Shani Wallis, Nancy from the Oliver film.

Wow Jenn, this is great...thanks so much. I feel really stupid--I've not listened to or even heard of most of these shows. I guess I'll take a trip to the library to see what I can find.

In the meantime, Gypsy in German? I think all those harsh gutterals would fit Madame Rose just fine: "Everythings, das Herauf Rosen Kommt".

I looked to buy a copy back when I discovered the show but couldn't find one for less than $60. Didn't want to spend that amount back then, but a kind record store owner who didn't want to part with his copy actually lent me his so I could make a tape. I think there was talk of a possible revival with Alison Fraser back when she was seen as having potential to be the next leading lady of musicals.

I absolutely had to revive this thread. I found the OBC recording of I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking it on the Road, and I haven't listened to anything else since I received it on Monday. I'm serious-I'm listening to it right now,and when I get in the car,I take the CD with me. Admittedly,it is a bit dated in orchestration and subject presentation. But there are "damned few" composer-lyricist teams like Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford, and there are still too few women composers in the musical theatre world. To have a musical written by women about a woman's life is a rare treasure.

I wish Encores! would pick this up-although it ran over 1000 performances,it's not too well known. I don't think it has the strongest book, but it would lend itself very well to a concert presentation with a great group of women.

It's also very infectious-I listen to the CD in my car,and I can't resist singing along to "Natural High," "Miss America," "Old Friend," and "Put in a Package and Sold."

It did not get good reviews, from what I know. I'll have to go and look it up in my theatre books to see what was written.

And Gretchen Cryer is also the lead performer, which is very cool.

They're also the composre-lyricist team behind the American Girls musical. How interesting...
