Have you read the 500 page about Merman? Is there another Ethel book that you (or anyone else on this board) would recommend to start with? I'm really interested in learning more on her.
Thanks,
Amalia

my fave- for anyone who likes anthony rapp and rent. "without you" by anthony rapp. a tear jerker but amazing book. (autobiography)
also, my dad got me this great book about old time theatre- "on broadway" by william stott...tells about the major plays and stories from the 1940s through 1970. its interesting. obviously no bernadette but yeah..i like reading about old theatre shows.
just some suggestions. there are tons more.

From: northern VA | posted: 9/17/2007 at 11:17:39 PM ET Amalia-there are 2 books about Ethel Merman to be published in upcoming months. I haven't read either of them yet-sorry!
She wrote an "autobiography" (one of those "as told to/by" books), but it is unmemorable.

From: NYC | posted: 9/18/2007 at 6:32:05 AM ET Merm's 100th birthday is on January 16, 2008 - I expect there will be some sort of PBS special, maybe some sort of Broadway concert, in addition to the upcoming books. Say what you will about the Merm, she was one of a kind and her contribution cannot go unnoticed.

From: northern VA | posted: 9/28/2007 at 3:02:19 PM ET Publishers Weekly (9/10 issue) had reviews of the upcoming Ethel Merman biographies:
Brass Diva by Caryl Flinn
$34.95, 540 pages
-"lacks vitality", "better written & researched" than Kellow's
-"more psychologically complex"
-addresses rumors of being a bigot, anti-Semite, homophobe, and having a lesbian affair (no, no, no, no to all)
-"masterfully anaylyzes Merman's work on stage, screen, and TV"
Ethel Merman: A Life by Brian Kellow
$25.95, 325 pages
-100 new interviews with Merman's contemporaries
-"livelier of the two"
-Brings "vibrant life and clarity to even familiar anecdotes"
-"bluntly paints" a portrait of the entertainer, readers will be "swept up in the colorful eyewitness accounts"
-"Testimonies from those who were there during her decline bring an emotional wallop to her final days"
