*The Lovely Bones ~ Alice Sebold
*The Notebook ~ Nicholas Sparks
*Living at the Edge of the World: A teenager's survival in the tunnels of Grand Central ~ Tina S. and Jamie Pastor Blotnick
*Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl ~ Tracy Quan
*The Perks of Being a Wallflower ~ Stephen Chbosky

and for a fluffier read:

*Shopgirl ~ Steve Martin
*The Shopaholic Series: Confessions of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, Shopaholic Ties the Knot ~ Sophie Kinsella
*Can You Keep a Secret? ~ Sophie Kinsella
*Trading Up ~ Candace Bushnell
*4 Blondes ~ Candace Bushnell
*Wicked ~ Gregory Maguire
*The Dirty Girls Social Club ~ Alisa Valdes-Rodrigues

I recently finished Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People you Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. I LOVED Tuesdays with Morrie; I think it changed my life lol. As for "5 People," I didn't like it as much as the other one. I'm currently reading Wicked and I have to say its one of the stranger books that I have read. A lot of it I don't understand because I'm young and I don't realize the allegory behind it. And as an ardent Wicked the musical fan, I love that story more. I also bought Anna Karenina (in honor of Bernadette),How to Get Rich by Donald Trump (just curious), and Catch 22.

I also highly recommend:

-Get Happy(Judy Garland bio)
-The Biography of Natalie Wood by Gavin Lambert
-Mary Tyler Moore's memoir
-Frank Rich's memoir Ghost Light
(I love memoirs if you couldn't tell)
-Catcher in the Rye
and a lot of others I can't think of right now...

Yay for Catch-22! I just finished reading that the other day. I also just read Utopia, and of course, I'm reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (again).

Check out "Girl in Hyacinth Blue" by Susan Vreeland - it's a short and sweet book about the history of ownership about a Vermeer painting. It's lovely. It was made into a tv movie.

Right now I'm reading "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire just to be a completist. It's very different from the happy musical version, but the imagination of it really has drawn me in. I'm also reading Clinton's "My Life".

Yay I love good book discussions!

One of my favorite fiction books which Ive read recently is White Oleander. Theres a movie of it w/Michelle Pfeiffer but I recommend the book more b/c of the writers style. Also, being a big biography fan as well, I liked this book because its written almost as a biography.

two of my fave non fiction reads include:
babs' unauthorized biography--so interesting even if it isnt all true.
kate remembered on katharine hepburn, a beautiful book about one of our greatest actresses
im currently reading anna karenina too (in honor of bernadette)
can anyone recommend a good bette midler book?

also, for theatre reads, i recommend the play i am my own wife (reading it AND seeing it.)
and making it on a broadway. very good albeit disillusioning.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who's going to read Anna Karenina in honor of Bernadette as you put it roselouise. I loved Making It On Broadway. It certainly is a good look at what life is like off the stage.

Bernadette mentioned in an interview right before Broadway Barks that she finally has time to read and she is reading Anna Karenina among other books.

I've heard that it's SUCH a HARD book to read. I definitely plan to one day, after all my summer reading is done for school, and a few of the books by my bed are done. This could be a while, cause I'm gonna be so busy with stuff this year... I'm hoping maybe the upcoming year will make me look at highschool happily cause I've hated it so far.

My 15 year old cousin wants to read it... I can't say that I've ever really had a desire to.

Some people dislike AK very much, while others have enjoyed it very much. It doesn't inspire a neutral response. Tolstoy drones on about politics and stuff, but you can skim that and not miss too much. It's very long (over 900 pages)-so break it up in chunks. Here's a rule of thumb-give any book *at least* 100 pages. If you get to 100 pages and you're not into it,put it down. Keep at it until you get to the 100th page-if you skip a few days, you may forget some parts. Futuremamarose,if you decide to read AK,more power to you. However, you're in high school. You'll have plenty of time to read AK in the future,if you want to. I've tried it about three times, and I haven't finished it. And I never even thought of it in high school. I have to start at the beginning, since I forget too many important parts.

When you're reading a book originally written in another language, finding a good translation is important. The translation currently being read by Oprah and her book club followers is acknowledged to be one of the more readable ones, which is why Oprah picked it (she's reading it for the first time, and she was very intimidated by it. However, she has thoroughly enjoyed it.). Modern Library usually offers decent translations.

As for plot-if you really want to know,do a Google search. It's a bit complicated, and I don't want to give anything away for those who are reading it. Plus,I've never finished it.

If you want to know the story but don't feel like reading the book, there have been several films. There's the Greta Garbo movie, which is a greatly condensed version and is uneven in some parts. The illegitimate storyline was censored from the movie. Vivien Leigh also played Anna Karenina-I've never seen that movie. The BBC did a miniseries of the film several years ago,and it covers more of the storyline.

Futuremamarose-I hope this year is a better high school year for you. My high school years had ups and downs-don't believe people who say that high school should be the best years of your life. That's a little depressing to me that high school represents the best years for some, since you have 60 years, for the most part,of living to do after that. God willing. Hang in there. College is much better. I know that's not a lot of comfort in the here and now,but high school does not last forever.

I second that Jenn. High School was some of the worst years of my life.

Yeah, Im not too far in AK but Im enjoying it thus far. I also like Chekhov though. I played Irina in Three Sisters in my acting class this past year. We did several scenes from that particular play and I got such a kick out of Bernadette playing that role and reading Three Sisters in Bobbies Girl!!
Im only on the 3rd chapter of AK so we'll see if I finish it. I too get bored w/books and like to read a bunch of different things at one time but i'll keep you posted.

also, i read about a summer book in elle magazine that might interest y'all. its called "Colors Insulting to Nature" and deals with a girl aspiring to be a star and her relationship w/her overbearing mother. I believe its supposed to be a comedy but I couldn't help but notice the Gypsy-like parallels
