From Internet Network: 152.163.253.x | posted: 5/27/2003 at 10:30:50 PM ET This is a publication of the Dramatists Guild. I've been going through some old issues which contain some really interesting interviews, articles by lyricist, composers, librettist and playwrights about the creative process, behind the scenes and business side of things. I thought the following were especially interesting in relation to Gypsy.
From Autumn 1994 "Sondheim on Passion" "Previewing in New York is a nightmare. The reason we used to go out of town, in the days when you could afford to, is to get away from all the vultures. These days they are all there at the first performance, spreading terrible word-of-mouth and doing everything they can to destroy you That's why they come. It's true. I was stnding in line to pick up opning night seats for Company and there was a couple in front of me waitng on line to buy tickets and one of them said to the other, "I hear it's the worst thing ever," and the other one said, "Me too!" enthusiastically and they were about to pay twenty-five buck of their hard-earned money. They couldn't wait. I can cope with that kind of pressure because I've had to all my life, but it's not so good for the cast.
"God knows there used to be people who would follow the trail of blood up to Boston and dto New haven. I know-I was one of them. mabye there was a bitchy intent, but I wanted to be the first on my block to see My Fair Lady . . but there weren't a lot of me back then. "
And from Craig Lucas. Hope this doesn't ruin the song for anyone. [Winter '95] "To this day I cannot listen to certain showtunes without hearing my original mis hearing of the words. In Gypsy I still think Rose sings at the end of "Some People" "well, they may stay and rock!" But not rollll!"

Its even sadder to think that people seek this kind of stuff out. They'll go to a show just so they can bash it. And actually already have it in their minds tht the show is horrible before even ever seeing it!! I know that the critics have not been invited to see Frank Wildhorn's new show CAMILLE CLAUDEL in its out of town try-out in Conn. and I can't really say I blame him!
