Many times the Drama Desk awards are a good indication of the Tony Awards but I sure hope that will not be true this year. Everyone send good thoughts to all those Tony voters to vote for Bernadette.

I think the fact that she is one of the most, if not the most well known and respected theatre performer alive today should stand for something. She isn't referred to the "Reigning Queen of Broadway" for nothing She is an exceptional singer and actress. If she wasn't she wouldnt be so successful. I really don't think she needs (another) award to prove that. Don't get me wrong...I am not downplaying these awards ceremonies...getting an award is great but it doesn't count for everything.
Plus, the Drama Desk nominations were announced on May 1st.And then only about 2 weeks in between the winners were decided on.Bernadette was out almost a week during that time and she's still finding that balance for Mama Rose...although I personally think she's got it down now! Tony voters get a longer chance to see the show and decide who they want to vote for.

| posted: 5/18/2003 at 10:59:18 PM ET No it isn't everything but after all the crap she has had to deal with over the last couple of years since this production was announced and the fact that she came through it all and so brilliantly DID IT, makes her completely deserve the recognition of her peers and the theater industry and that is what these awards represent. I'm ashamed for all the Drama Desk voters and I hope the Tony Voters make a wiser choice.
Just my feelings. I'm sure Bernadette will handle anything that comes her way with style and grace as she always does.

From Internet Network: 68.32.131.x | posted: 5/18/2003 at 11:14:19 PM ET I thought it was pretty cute of Bernadette to kneel to give Vanessa Redgrave her award. I also like the way she named the nominees--unlike so many presnters, she spoke slowly and distinctly. Nice to see her in a shorter dress, too, just for a change. Frivolous thought: I wonder how many pairs of shoes she has?

From Internet Network: 64.12.96.x | posted: 5/18/2003 at 11:14:53 PM ET That was me up above. Well, let's see as far as recent Drama Desk vs. Tonys, Marla Schaffel won the DD but Ebersole won the Tony. Of course Ebersole had never won before so she had that "going" for her and Jane Eyre was flopping. of course Peters tied with Carmello and we know hwo that wound up. Stephen Spinella won DD for the Dead, but I believe Boyd Gaines won for Contact so ...
There are more Tony voters i believe than Drama Desk who may or may not have gotten to see Peters with her absences and some people still don't seem to be able to shake their, as one critic said, entrenched notions of how the role should be played. The Times article on Friday about revivals said that Gypsy would not tour. At least that's the way I read it which won't help its chances at the Tonys since presenters want to give the award to something they may have to promote.
BTW, Moljul did you ever get your Media player picture?

| posted: 5/18/2003 at 11:17:24 PM ET I did at the very end. I saw the last fifteen minutes or so which means I totally missed seeing Bernadette. So someone give me the scoop. What was she wearing, what was with her kneeling for Vanessa Redgrave. I missed it all and could only hear it. I am really pissed about the screw up with the media player on the theatermania website.

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 5/18/2003 at 11:17:34 PM ET First of all, Bernadette is not the only hard working performer on Broadway. Yes, she is an incredibly hard working individual. But these awards are not based on how hard working someone is. They are based on the performance each individual nominated gives. I'm sure Marissa could tell you all about the "crap" she's endured since joining HAIRSPRAY too. Fact is, Broadway performers do not have an easy life. Many people think they work 2 hours and thats it( 4 depending if its a matinee day). They don't take into account rehearsals, press interviews, television interviews, awards ceremonies, charity events...ect. Do I personally think bernadette should win the TONY? Yes, but I am not a TONY voter so my vote really doesn't count for much.

Shoes: black, really high (well, anything over a running shoe is high to me), strappy, ankle strap, I think.
Kneeling: as the camera follows Vanessa up to the stage, Bernadette comes into view, to one side of the podium, kneeling and holding up the award; terrific!

If you really didn't want to "rehash" things then I would think you would have just ignored my post entirely. Everyone on this board is entitled to thier own opinions the last time I checked......

From Internet Network: 64.12.96.x | posted: 5/18/2003 at 11:31:07 PM ET Well to look on the bright side, at least we won't have to read a bunch of "Marissa was robbed" and "Bernadette only won because blah, blah" posts on ATC. Of course there will undoubtedly be the Riedel swipe at Gypsy and Peters. On that note, this was in Variety online today, "The battle between "Nine" and "Gypsy" is shaping up as one of the most talked-about contests, although it's really the media attention that was generating buzz at the annual Tony nominees breakfast May 14.
The contest isn't so much "Gypsy" vs. "Nine" as the New York Post (pro-"Nine," anti-"Gypsy") vs. the New York Times (pro-"Gypsy").
The day after opening, there seemed to be a backlash against the Post's preview coverage of "Gypsy." "Then the Times went overboard praising 'Gypsy,' so there is now a backlash against the show," said one attendee. "

| posted: 5/18/2003 at 11:34:45 PM ET Yes they are but your constant reprimands get very tiring. I'm well aware of an actors life and don't think I ever stated it was a life of leisure or that Marissa was not hard working just that I felt it was terrible that she won for her performance over Bernadette's performance and that everything that Bernadette has done with this role she deserves to be recognized by her peers "for her performances" which is the point of the awards.
Let's just hope things go better at the Tonys.
