ok, I'm seriously baffled, in all my time of coming to this board ,and scouring the net for bp facts and trivia, have I ever heard this.
I found it when I search the sondheim.com boards for "bernadette peters" (worth doing)

"Triva that means nothing to anybody but Me: Were you aware that a production of GYPSY was planned at Los Angeles' Shurbert Theatre (20+ years ago) with Carol Burnette as Rose, Harvey Korman has Herbie, and bernadette peters as Louise/Gypsy? Now THAT I would have liked to see."

is this just a myth? someone PLEASE explain!

they say bernadette's wonderful..........and she is

Yes, that was a possibility in the early 70s but I don't believe much ever came of it. Of course there are lots of possible productions that never made it very far.

It seems to me that I vaguely remember once reading in a biography of Carol Burnett that Jack Klugman, who originated the role of Herbie, was slated to direct the production you're referring to. My impression is that this would have been for television or summer stock, not Broadway.

Oops, I read your original post too quickly. I see it was supposed to play the Los Angeles Schubert, so disregard my last sentence.

If it had happened, that would have been (in my opinion) a very miscasted production. I cannot picture Carol Burnett as Rose (I know people are saying the same about Bernadette now, but Bernadette is a much more logical choice than Carol), nor can I picture Bernadette (back then I mean) as Gypsy; she was always the Dainty June type.
I would love to see Benadette andCarol do something together in the future. I lways enjoy watching them together (and seperately).
