Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 9/13/2011 at 7:51:31 AM ET Several reviews that are not listed elsewhere. I find it amusing - and unfortunate - that Bernadette is considered, well, just too attractive and fit for Sally.
"In one of the show's missteps, Peters is actually poorly cast as Sally, who has supposedly let herself go over the decades, turning into a slovenly housewife. The svelte Peters looks terrific, and is smartly gowned, offering little of the necessary contrast with the elegant Phyllis."

"Peters, meanwhile, suggests a degree of mental imbalance in Sally, but sounds wobbly -- though this adds uncomfortable poignancy to "Losing My Mind." "
New York Post
Peters may not be the most traditional casting for Sally, now an ultra-neurotic housewife in Phoenix, but she exquisitely captures the character's unfathomable sadness and longing. It's a star turn, for sure, but one that brings attention to itself because of its truthfulness. During her first-act her rendition of "In Buddy's Eyes," one is acutely aware of Sally lying to both herself and Ben, and her understated version of "Losing My Mind" is simply shattering in its poignancy.

"That Peters, well-seasoned in Sondheim, struggles a bit vocally early on isn’t altogether out of character in her shattered take on Sally. When it matters most she summons all her mighty powers for “Losing My Mind.” Obeying Sondheim’s lyrics or the director or both, she plants herself center stage, “not going left, not going right.” Stockstill, Peters delivers the show’s most moving moment.” "
(Will post link later)
"But this is a show no grown-up should miss; after 40 years, it remains a piercing stare of hope and regret, longing and compromise. The kind of musical theater it dissects and eulogizes may be vanishing from Broadway, but Follies is still here, and it’s gorgeous."

| posted: 9/14/2011 at 3:26:13 PM ET Correct me if I'm wrong but that pictures shows 4 other divas specifically attacking Bernadette's hair. Note, Terri White is trying to eat it. Well at least they aren't trying to strangle her like Bernadette is trying with Elaine Paige.
Great picture. Thanks for posting.
"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990
"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 11/21/2011 at 8:23:37 AM ET Review from ''The Telegraph'' (UK):
"Peters plays Sally, locked in a marriage to a man she despises, chasing a hopeless fantasy of romance, breaking your heart with that little catch in her voice and tears running down her face as she sings Losing My Mind not as a ballad but as an angry accusation."
