Here is an excerpt from an article in which Bernadette speaks about Al Hirscfeld in light of his recent passing( which I'm sure most of you have heard about by now).
------------------------------

"It was an honor to be drawn by him," said Bernadette Peters, herself the object of Hirschfeld's pen in such musicals as "Sunday in the Park with George," "Into the Woods" and, most recently, "Annie Get Your Gun." "He did his interpretation of your performance. And each time he drew you, it was different, capturing what you did on stage."

In recent years, Hirschfeld became something of a growth industry. His drawings graced everything from magazine covers to postage stamps. He did the portraits for a series of commemoratives honoring comedians such as Jack Benny, Laurel and Hardy and Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy and later for a series on silent film stars. He even was the subject of a documentary film.

On June 23, two days after what would have been his 100th birthday, he will receive a rare accolade. The Martin Beck Theatre on West 45th Street will be renamed for Hirschfeld. The event will be a celebration of his life and will feature Broadway performers under the direction of Jerry Zaks.

Added Peters: "It's going to be hard not seeing him on opening nights any more, coming down the aisle. He was part of our theater heritage."
