Sounding fantastic.
Costume makes me laugh though - she looks like she might suddenly pull an apple pie out of a wood stove for a Mrs. Paul's commercial.

Just saw this video for the first time today, Bernadette was such a great singer, even at that early age.

I'm sorry, I don't know the background to the TV show she was in at the time, but that ridiculous costume she's wearing just reminds me of that awful Texas cult which has been in the news recently.

I'm not sure where that clip was from--possibly the Carol Burnett show, but she sang the same song in a similar fashion on the Ed Sullivan program around the same time. Here's a link to a past thread where we discussed it.

I'm just speculating, but I think part of the idea with TV producers back then was that Bernadette was meant to be some kind of antidote for the mass audience to all those "damn hippies." Here was a young girl who was old-fashioned and nice, not walking around in tie-dyed t-shirts and torn bell-bottoms with peace insignias. So being as unimaginative as TV producers always were and always will be, they decided to intensify her wholesome image as far as they could, taking it into the realm of the ridiculous. And, of course, Bernadette, being a complete unknown at the time, was utterly at their mercy as far as how she would be presented on network television. Thus, voila! We have Bernadette as walking/talking caricature of the 1950s girl next door (in a very small town).

Thanks for the link. Well, I'm amazed. It sounds as though it wasn't a costume and she actually chose to wear that dress. I have to confess that I do have a photo of myself wearing a similair dress, except mine had a veil. I was seven, and it was my first holy communion dress.

LOL! Yeah, you're right it does look like a first communion dress of that era.
