Each affiliate station is free to show whatever it feels like. So Boston and New York may be broadcasting live from the Metropolitan Opera while Knoxville and Topeka are stuck with a pre-taped motivational speaker infomercial or a 40 year old rerun of Lawrence Welk. It's completely at the discretion of the individual station managers, most of whom are philistines.
So, for example, although that episode of the Character Studies series will be on KQED-Pittsburgh tonight at 10:30, it may or may not be on anywhere else. It's not on in St Louis. It wasn't on when it was first shown and it will probably never be on. Which is just one of the many reasons that I would never consider giving a dime to PBS, despite their constant begging.

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 1/11/2007 at 2:48:02 PM ET Is "Rose" a new programme? If so, there may be some Bernadette fans in Pittsburgh who might tape it for those of you who can't get the channel. I already had an idea of what PBS is and have to admit that they've even had a few quid out of me as I've purchased the odd PBS CD and DVD in the past.
It's all much simpler over here - we have (by law) to pay a hefty TV Licence Fee every year which goes straight to the BBC. But I'm not complaining - it's wonderful to watch the BBC television channels without having to put up with commercials every five minutes. It's also great to have all the non-commercial BBC radio stations which cater for every taste. The added benefit is that no corporation or government can influence or dictate the content of the BBC's mandate. My only complaint about the Beeb ....I just wish they would play more Bernadette on their radio music channels!

Did she say anything interesting about "Rose"?
Er ... not to imply that anything she would utter would not be a pearl of wisdom

| posted: 1/11/2007 at 4:32:20 PM ET Karen's right about PBS programming, especially the past couple of years. Its infuriating. It always seems that the programs that I want to see most are the ones that always get pushed aside at the last moment. Insightful arts programs or a particularly sharp episode of Frontline get replaced by badly produced North Carolina tourist board napfests. When this Character Studies program first made the rounds I asked someone at our local PBS affiliate "so when is this going to get aired" and the response was sort of , "uh, ask again in a couple of months!"
That said, I'd still love to see it someday...
