From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 11/3/2005 at 9:40:59 AM ET A followup, sort of, on two themes here. A few years ago, I had to put my golden retriever to sleep; he had been my best buddy. He had cancer and was in much pain, so at first there was relief in my emotions. The loss really hit me big time two months later in the middle of the night.
I have another dog now, and when I've had some emotional moments alone recently, my dog was fully aware that I was upset and knew to sit by me and lick my face -- he doesn't do that regularly. When I had a stomach bug last month, both my dog and cat behaved differently, were quieter; I usually walk the dog on his leash around the yard (or else he takes off down the street), but when I was sick and weak, he did his business and came right back to me on the steps. I believe completely that I knew I was sick, and behaved well.
I'm with moljul: I don't buy "they're just animals" either. And I've often thought that Bernadette will find great comfort in her dogs during this time.

There wasn't a dry eye in the house for Bernadette Peters' concert benefitting the Jewish Community Centers of Chicago Tuesday night. The event was the Tony winner's first public appearance since the tragic death of her husband, Michael Wittenberg, in a helicopter crash Sept. 26 in Montenegro. Peters explained it was the importance of the cause that led her not to cancel, despite her loss. Many wept -- understandably -- as Peters sang such poignant classics as ''You're Not Alone'' and ''Count Your Blessings.''

| posted: 11/3/2005 at 1:44:38 PM ET PTM that is so great that you went to the Art Institute - that is one of the top things on my to-do-in-this-lifetime list. You must have seen the Seurat there?
There really is something about the way Bernadette sings "Some Enchanted Evening" onstage. I know that it is essentially the same arrangement that was recorded for the album, but her delivery of the song onstage is just too beautiful for words. I've seen literally hundreds of concerts by hundreds of performers, but those few minutes that I saw Bernadette sing that song is definitely in the upper 2% of all of my concert experiences.
All this talk about doggies makes me want to skip work and go home and hang out with my good ol' elderly laborador.

Indeed, "Fever" was different from the other times I've heard it- Marvin did play more on the piano. But I was sitting in the third row, and I noticed Bernadette flashing him a few looks, which makes me think that something was awkward in the symphony's accompaniment and Marvin was using the added piano to keep the song on track.

Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 11/5/2005 at 6:59:58 PM ET Leebee - The Art Institute was incredible, and I was totally surprised by my reaction. If I wasn't afraid of looking like an emotional fool in public, I could easily have cried my way through several of the galleries. It wasn't just that after 20 years, I was finally getting to see the Seurat in person and everything it represented, but there was also Caillebotte's RAINY DAY, all those Monets, the Cassatt, O'Keefe and of course Hopper's NIGHTHAWKS is there too.
As for Bernadette's performances -- I remember reading an interview with Joanna Gleason back during ITW time and she was talking about being able to watch Bernadette work and how she builds or accumulates a performance. I think all the R&H songs she does in concert are even stronger than on the recording which might also be partly due to Marvin who I think has more swing and zip to his conducting than Tunick even though I like Tunick's arrangements a lot.
Speaking of arrangements . . . Since it was previously mainly bass and drums in Fever, I thought that maybe they were trying out a different arranagement for the song. Personally, I preferred when Marvin just did a little of the slinky piano during the intro. I thought the piano during the other parts sort of broke the seductive mood.
I forgot to mention that during her intro, Bernadette said she was happy to be here for such a wonderful organization as JCC which she had heard about from a women whose friend had all her medical expenses paid for by JCC even though she wasn't Jewish and then at the end, before she sang Rose's Turn, she took the time to say that she hoped that they had raised lots of money and it was what they had planned so they could continue doing all the wonderful things they do.
