Christine is absolutely right. She was definitely shaking her head in reference to what she was singing during Time Heals Everything. It was a very stern "NO" with both her head shake and her facial expressions.

Oh, and thanks for correcting me on Marvin's show title. I hadn't remembered that part being in the title.

Someone can fill in/correct this song list as needed. I am not sure if I've got everything.

Let Me Entertain You
No One is Alone
There is Nothin' Like a Dame
Fever
The Gentleman Is a Dope
I'm Flying
Unexpected Song
Mr. Snow

My Funny Valentine
With So Little to Be Sure Of/Children Will Listen

Yes, its from Peter Pan. She has a little story to preface it when she talks about how much she loved Mary Martin growing up. She also said one night (when she was quite little) she cried herself to sleep because she realized couldn't fly.

Perhaps I'm just reading too much into things; but that was the impression I got.
I would get that impression too, if I saw it. I'm assuming she didn't do that last week.

I know I don't post much, but I was there last night with my mom (who spent the entire evening in tears...) and Bernadette was fantastic.
I was sitting next to a very cute old man (you know, all dressed up in his suit and his shined shoes) and he was humming along with My Funny Valentine and...Some Enchanted Evening? Maybe?
Nothing Like a Dame was hysterical, and this seemed like it was an audience that you'd really have to play to to make them laugh, and they were laughing. Just when you thought she wouldn't go lower, she did (of course!). Did anyone else think that she ended it a bit higher than on the R&H CD? She was definitly having a lot of fun with it.
And...Fever was incredible. She sounded so different to me...so very much like the Peggy Lee recording I have. And yes, the look after she set down the microphone to fix her dress was perfect.
Unexpected Song was beautiful. Did anyone else hear her throat sort of tighten right at the end, maybe a line or two before the high note?
I love her 'Mr. Snow'. And I love that she said "atwitter". Does she always use that particular word in her banter, or did it just sort of slip in?
Anyway, everything she sang was lovely. She hit everything, and she really looked liked she was feeling the songs as much as she could, without going so far into them that she wouldn't be able to bring herself back. She was laughing with the audience, and for most of it, especially the upbeat songs, she seemed to be enjoying herself.
Everyone that I talked to on the elevators and out in the parking deck were going on and on with how wonderful she sounded and how fantastic she looked (..."she doesn't look her age at all!").
The only thing that stopped it from being an absolutly perfect night all around was the rain. It was beyond pouring. I hope everyone who had to travel down the highways made it home okay. But we did pass a limo on I78, and you just had to wonder who was inside it...

Just got home from the most fantastic weekend. Everything was perfect. I have to agree with everyone that Bernadette gave a truly great performance. Given the circumstances, I went in having no idea what to expect. Well, there was nothing detached or "by the numbers" in what she was doing up on that stage.

Each song had a rawness and an intensity that went beyond anything I've ever seen her do before. I guess it's a truism that great artists work through their pain in their art, but to actually be able to see that happening up close in front of your eyes in all its immediacy is a stunning experience.

Each song was so great that it's hard to pick out highlights. For me, oddly enough, "I'm Flying" was one of the most memorable. I've always thought it was pleasant and charming enough but hardly thrilling. Last night it was thrilling. Nothing whimsical or fanciful, just a tremendous yearning and passion.

And then in "Children Will Listen," on the line "wishes come true, not free," she paused before "free," and then uttered that word with such ferocity and such an emphatic hand gesture that it was almost frightening.

She spoke less than usual between songs and her demeanor in general was more serious, although as mentioned she did joke a bit. But I felt she was very physical in her performance style--even more than usual. She was really using her body to extend the meanings of what she was singing about. Someone said it was like a master class, and it was!

Getting together with the board members is always a great experience. If anyone has the chance to do that, take it, because it's tremendous fun. As Sister Rose mentioned, a very high degree of merriment was achieved in the late hours following the concert. I was definitely feeling no pain, although today was a different story. Word of advice: stick to the Jeungling and skip the Stoli.

It was an incredible night. Can a concert be called a masterpiece? I don't know, but if it can, then that's what this was.

The concert was wonderful, as everyone has already mentioned. So much more energetic than last week. To me, "Fever" alone is worth the price of admission.

But Sister Rose, I have to wonder where you actually went after the show. The Crayola Factory is not even in Bethlehem.

Well, I really don't have much to add. I agree with everyone that she was absolutely incredible! The best I have ever heard her (and this is the third time I have seen this particular concert). Christine, you had it exactly right about the shaking of her head during Time Heals Everything. She, I think, began to cry during Not a Day Goes by, because she stopped singing and just let the music take over for a while. But, she pulled herself together and continued on. Her eyes were still tearful during You Could Drive A Person Crazy. But, she was definitely very physical during that number and she seemed to have a lot of fun with the more lighthearted songs. During the more emotional numbers, she looked up a lot, as if she were singing for just one person.

She did not talk as much as she usually does, and she cut the intro to Rose's Turn a little bit, but other than that, she didn't seem to be rushing too much. She was absolutely brilliant. I am sure these appearances are difficult for her, to say the least, but as Mandy said, I hope they are also therapeutic.

Getting together with everyone was a blast as always! I have some great pictures that I will try to post tomorrow. I am just way too exhausted to figure out how to do it tonight (I am very dumb when it comes to computers). I also have pictures of the rose decorations that adorned the entire hall. They were beautiful.

Thank you oh-so-very-much for sharing about this fabulous event!

I cannot wait until May 1, 2006! I have yet to see her in concert. I know that it will be an evening that I will never forget.

Thank you all for sharing so much. and in wonderful detail! Sorry I was so impatient, but I was so anxious about Bernadette, and it sounds like she is successfully taking the first difficult and painful steps. I cry just hearing you tell of her amazing performances. I hope our love and support is helping her "keep on, keeping on..".

You all are wonderful people!

Thanks, Patty

Just add my thanks too. Sister Rose and Karen's reports made me feel I was there.

It sounds as if Bernadette got that first concert out of the way, then could move on.
It must have been wonderful.

I too am hoping for a new CD with 'Fever' and 'My Funny Valentine.'

I was there on Saturday night as well. I was hoping to see some of you there but I realized I didn't know what anyone looked like or where you'd be sitting plus while I live about 45mins from Bethlehem, the friend I was with had a longer drive so she wanted to get going.
Anyway, my thoughts about the concert pretty much echoe everyone's. I'm so thrilled that this was my first Bernadette concert. I got the most teary during "Not A Day Goes By" but couldn't see that she was teary although I did notice the musical interlude being longer than usual.
Did anyone else think that she seemed to be playing different intentions in some songs than others? Like Christine said, I'm not sure if I'm reading too much into it but it seemed to me that during "No one is alone" and maybe one or two others she found almost a whimsy in them that I haven't seen/heard her do before and I was thinking it was because she didn't want herself to go to that darker place.. or maybe I'm crazy-haha
The other thing that truly impressed me was the moment into Rose's Turn. I saw Gypsy multiple times and it always wowed me but it was so cool to see her *snap* into character like that without having the entire play behind her and just become Rose. I was thinking to myself I hope the audience is well-educated on this show or they're going to think she's looney! Well, that's my two cents. Glad everyone else had a nice time. I thought the whole evening was just magical. I think it actually exceeded my expecations
