I found this on Dejanews and didn't like it at all...do you guys
agree with what he is saying??

I saw AGYG on Tuesday evening. Bernadette Peters had a hard time with
the
accent and we had a hard time understanding her. The first half
wasn't too bad
but if it hadn't been for the fantastic music I would have gone to
sleep.
Quite a few people around me were doing just that. The first half
also was way
too long.
The second half could have been over in 10 minutes and that might have
done the
trick. Too many people squirming around in their seats. The costumes
were the
same old, same old. To me the only beam of light was some of the
songs sung by
Tom Wopat.
If anything made the show, it was the dancing. Not that there was
much, but
what was done was quite unusual. An OK evening but not memorable.
Bernadette Peters needs a more gentile part. Playing rough & tough
Annie is
not an easy role for her.

I thought that was a little harsh, but I had the same trouble with the accent.
It drove me crazy. However, I don't think she needs a more gentile character
to play. The role suits her perfectly... she just made some bad choices,
which was very disappointing for a die-hard fan.

I agreed that Tom Wopat had some wonderful moments. But I wouldn't single out
the dancing as a plus - it's wonderfully executed, but not really the right
style for the piece. I thought the costumes and scenery were exquisite!

So, there's my $.02.

I was wondering, has anyone from the South seen the show? Maybe the
person who wrote the review was from up north somewhere and just dosen't
understand southern drawl. Then again, maybe not...

I grew up in the North (Philadelphia), but I've lived in the South for 15
years. What Bernadette is doing is her own version of hill-billy -- and it
just doesn't ring true.

HAHAHA!!! What a joke!! I just saw the show for the third time yesterday and
loved it even more than before.

Bernadette makes the part seem sooooo natural if you ask me. Annie isn't
rough and tumble with her, but naive and sweet. I love it to death!!!
And speaking as someone who's been seeing the show progress from the night
after it premiered in DC to a month after, to a few days after the NYC
premiere I can tell you that it just keeps getting better. Tom Wopat and BP
seemed to be having soooo much fun together. There was a part in Old
Fashioned Wedding where he's supposed to pick her up so BP was already for it
and threw her leg up in the air and stuff, but he didn't pick her up. So
she's standing there with her leg in the air and they both start laughing and
he finally picks her up, it was sooooo funny!!!!

Of course the fuddy duddy's of the world might not have enjoyed it. Both the
people sitting next to me where bored out of their minds (one of them was my
aunt), but they don't matter one little bit. I wish that I could see it
again, but alas I think I'm done :0(

well I'm from Virginia. We're technically the south since we're below the
Mason Dixon line. Anyway I understood every word she said.

The dancing really had me going "huh?" too. Like Sun in the Morning-
They're all there in these fancy gowns and stuff, and they end up line dancing
when a fiddle player walks on stage. WOOOOOSH- that wend right over my
head!!! But I moved past it. And after awhile the accent is okay too, but I
don't think that it's at all necessary to SING in accent, it does make it hard
to understand.
