I am a Sarah Brightman fan...not as big as Bernadette but I think
she's great... anywya, I bought an album called "Surrender:The
Unexpected Songs" where Sarah sings all Andrew Lloyd Webber stuff. On
the album she sings like three songs from "Song and Dance"--
"Unexpected Song", "Tell Me On A SUnday", and "Nothing Like You've
Ever Known". She sings them well but in NO comparison to
Bernadette...Sarah simply doesn't put the emotion into it. In the
liner notes Webber writes something like, "I had Sarah record these
songs because they had never been recorded to my satisfaction..."
(that's not verbatim but that's the point). Now, I guess since he was
married to Sarah he would say something like that but in my opinion NO
ONE can tackle "Nothing Like You've Ever Known" like Bernadette. Just
my opinion though--because Sarah is terrific and I am a big fan...the
albums great too. And I really don't know why I'm going on and on
about this...just thought I'd share it with you.
If you're a Sarah fan you should join my Sarah list...captnemo @
onelist because those people aren't tlaking at all! -Eric

I am not a Sarah Brightman fan for the exact reasons you've stated. She's got
a gorgeous voice, but there is absolutely no emotion there, and there's
nothing more boring than a "singer". While Bernadette has sounded better (and
sung better music) than she does on the Song and Dance OBCR, the feeling
behind everything she sings keeps me listening to the cd. And I agree, no one
does "nothing like you've ever known" like Bernadette.

By that ALW might have meant that it wasn't recorded the right way, meaning
the sound wasn't right, not that Bernadette didn't do a wonderful job.

What I'm having a problem with now is that if that was the point of what he
was saying, then he's a total hypocrite, because if you read the "Song and
Dance" CD little booklet there, it says that ALW chose Bernadette espically
for this project, and that she was ready to become the leading lady or
something like that, I don't remember the exact words, but it was a true
compliment.

ALW should be very proud of Bernadette, she won w tony and she thanked him for
his "beautiful music" and praised him. ALW was also saying on the CD cover
that it was one of smoothest and best runs he had ever had.

Who knows!

I've also heard Lloyd Webber say that Sarah Brightman was his choice to do
Evita in the movie. His feelings for her obviously affect his taste. I don't
think she's talent-free, but she's simply not in the same class as Bernadette
Peters - or Patti Lupone, Betty Buckley or any other contemporary Broadway
"stars." I even think that Teri Bibb (a predecessor Christine) was better in
Phantom.

Okay this is off, but you guys brought up Sarha Brightman.....which makes me
think of my Antonio Banderas, which brings me to this: Antonio is doing the
movie of Phantom....but I have not heard who will be Christine. I have this
tape of Andrew lloyd Webber Celebration where antonio sings with sarah, and
Sarah in no way make a connection with him, or even looks interested(hello!)
Well, it just sorta looked like she was just going through the motions. I know
this is so off and not related to Bernadette, but who do you guys think should
be the screen's Christine?
.....Christiane Noll? any takers/

It's just funny that Antonio will be playing the Phantom...and I bet
the try for a moderatly big star for the role of Christine--if I think
of anyone I'll let you know. -Eric

I hear Kate Winslet can sing. In a movie version of SWEENEY TODD that they're
thinking of having Tim Burton direct, she's a candidate for Johanna. I didn't
know she could sing.

That would be cool because I like her (even though I didn't really
like TITANIC, I like Kate)...and if she can sing that's even better.
I'm still trying to think of someone for Christine. -Eric

This is a wild idea I doubt people will agree with but how about someone
like JEWEL? She IS a very talented singer...but I HONESTLY don't picture
her as a CHRISTINE.

KAte would make a good Christine. I could also see Neve Cambell.

Jeez, no Goldie in "Chicago"? That sucks, she would have been great. Who's
gonna do Roxie now??
As for Madeline, I don't know anything about "The Phantom of the Opera," so I
don't know what you're talking about... but whatever it is Madeline could do
it!! She's the greatest. Madeline, Bernadette, and Jennifer Love Hewitt
should do a musical together.

Yeah , Jewel is a fantasstic singer AND she was training in opera but
I don't see her as the "Christine" type. I think they probably would
go to Broadway to cast this since the singer must have an incredible
range...or they may cast someone like Neve Cambell or Gweynth Paltrow
and have someone else sing for it. -Eric

Not a bad choice at all - although I still don't understand why they're not
using Goldie Hawn. I think that was wonderful casting - I wasn't even that
bothered about having Madonna as Velma, although I don't know why they
wouldn't just use Bebe. She's a big enough name and much better for the role.

Marni Nixon has spent her entire career singing for other people. I'm
thankful she was around to bail out Natalie Wood and countless others, but I
sure would like to see her face once in a while - not as Christine, however.
She's gotta be pretty old by now.

Singing a little snippet in Sense & Sensibility doesn't mean she can handle a
singing role. I like her, too, but as a singer, I would need to hear it to

Just a little fun fact about Goldie Hawn, she started out at the theater I do
shows at. She got her start at Montgomery Playhouse and we have a letter from
her saying how much she loved this place and how it's like abig family. Oh,
did you also know that Sylvester Stalone got kicked out of Elementary school.
He went to Whooton Elementary school and he went to Blair high school.
They're both natives of Maryland!!

I don't think they meant that "Sense and Sensibility" was the basis of Kate
Winslet's singing ability; they were just offering it as an example.

I'm a pretty big Sarah fan, her voice is just so wonderfully pure!! Her
Christine is almost as good as Marina Prior's!!! her voice type is
definately different to Bernadette's , but they are both definately
divas of the first degree.~!!

ps-happy christmas everyone-only 3 more shopping days left till

my pick for the on-screen christine would probably be Marina Prior, who
was Christine here in Australia. She looks incredible, and her voice is
pretty fantastic....
~Bed~-I would say Bernadette, but her range is unfortunately not wide
enough

who will or who should....I thought of this the other day, Brian Stokes
Mitchell as the Phantom, and Audra McDonald as Cristine. The workes so
beautifully together in Ragtime, and lord knows both of them have the voices
and acting ability!

A word about Brian Stokes Mitchell, if you go to his website and send him an
E-mail, he will, PERSONALLY answer it. he did for me. He does read our
letters, it may take a month or two to get back to you, but he does. I wrote
him a letter and he responded. He's really wonderful and very intelligent.

Noelle-I got a response from him too! He is also a very stunning and gracious

Is Jewel the new pop singer of the day? Sorry, I quit listening to the radio
when I was about 14. Olivia Newton-John was the deal then. Once I started
working in the theatre, pop music lost its appeal.
