something that can be put into words, but you certainly know a great singer=

when you hear one. Into the second category, Bernadette Peters most certain=

falls. Listen to the way she breathes new life into the 13 songs that compo=
se=20
her newest album, Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein. Peters doe=
s=20
not act a song -- she embodies it -- and the result is always entrancing.
The CD=E2=80=99s first track, =E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s a Grand Night for Singi=
ng,=E2=80=9D is the perfect=20
opener, for the recording is filled with an overflow of grand singing and=20
superlative arrangements by the legendary Jonathan Tunick. Peters spreads h=
er=20
creamy, sometimes smoky, and always emotion-filled tones among some of=20
Rodgers and Hammerstein=E2=80=99s best-known works as well as lesser-known =
gems like=20
the beautifully optimistic =E2=80=9CSo Far=E2=80=9D from Allegro. The two-t=
ime Tony winner=20
manages to find both the charm and longing in State Fair=E2=80=99s =E2=80=
=9CIt Might As Well=20
Be Spring,=E2=80=9D and her version of Oklahoma!=E2=80=99s =E2=80=9COut of =
My Dreams=E2=80=9D is equally=20
heartfelt. Other highlights include a marvelously nuanced reading of =E2=80=
=9CMister=20
Snow=E2=80=9D; a spirited, jovial version of =E2=80=9CThere Is Nothin=E2=80=
=99 Like a Dame=E2=80=9D; and a=20
belty, uplifting version of the Carousel anthem, =E2=80=9CYou=E2=80=99ll Ne=

I=E2=80=99ve been a BP fan since high school, but when I listened to her ne=

recording, I fell for her all over again. To borrow a title from another of=

the disc=E2=80=99s gems, Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein is, =
