I HAVE to comepletely disagree here. I was able to do a few songs y R&H in
school this year and last, and they are anything but dull and blank. That is
the beauty of them. They appear simple and easy to do, but to do them well
and make them believeable (not cheesy and "high school production-ish") is
very hard. Seriously, I could go on for days about the marvels of Rodgers
and Hammerstien, but I don't have time right now. True, almost everyone
knows he songs- and when someone performs them badly, they can appear
overdone. But, when someone nails it completely- it always seems like the
first time. IMO- the single best moment in all of musical theatre is in "The
King and I" during "Shall We Dance" when the music changes. I'm literally
brought to tears when I see this done well. I definitely think that
Bernadette can do it well, and I'm looking forward to hearing it.
Soapbox goes back under my bed. . .
