I read on theatre.com that there's a chance that Into the Woods might have
a revival on Broadway next season. Does anybody know anything about that?
And what ever happened to Gypsy in London, anyway?

Yes- they are planning on bringing ITW back to Broadway- I think for next
year. They had audtitions earlier in the week for it. From what I've heard
they changed the 2nd act quite a bit.....

As for GYPSY-last i heard Bernadette was planning on going over to London in
2002 to do that.

Hope this helps
Cindy =)

Along with next year's revivals is Oklahoma! I've heard rumors that Kristin
Chenoweth may be in it. What about the revival of A Little Night Music that
I heard so much about before? Is that ever happening?

I think it's possible....

Sondheim seems to be making a comeback... With Follies going strong..and
Assassins opening in November... and talks about A Little Night Music (I
still insist the touring run with Chuck Wagner & Donna McKechnie was a trial
thing for possible Broadway revival), it seems Sondheim is in an upswing...

not to mention if you look at all the regional productions of sondheim shows
happening all over USA & Canada it seems that Sondheim is being produced
more than ever... which i might add, with all the hype surrounding all the
"old style" Broadway revivals, it's quite a comfort...

Now when a revival for "Anyone Can Whistle" gets announced THAT'S when I'll
get excited... that show just simply in the wrong place at the wrong
time...it's SO good...

I think ANYONE CAN WHISTLE has some good songs...
but the overall story isn't all that spectacular.
The recording with Madeline Kahn and Bernadette
is pretty amazing.

Kelli,
I think the overall plot definetly has some flaws.... I like to say it's the
most original spoof of "everything" in stage every written...
The plot is kind of "The Music Man" meets "A Streetcar Named Desire"... the
first act seemed very much in the style of Gilbert & Sullivan...and the
spoofs & parodies include almost everything....

I think one of the funniest things in the show is how they poke fun at
"catch lines" in "traditional musicals"... for instance the character of
Cora (angela landsbury) constantly uses the word "brilliant!" (with major
rolled r's)... it's a parody of caling cards for musicals...
this being a Bernadette list, I think a good example to use is from "Dames
At Sea"... the lead female character seemed to overuse the phrase "I'll do
my best", "I'll try" (i can't remember the exact catch phrase)...when
seeing the show and hearing the line i was always like "all right, here
comes a big show stopper"....
anyhoo, my point is catch lines so to speak are cliche and actually really
corny...and I think "Anyone can Whistle" highlights that point... that's one
of the things that led to it's downfall... it poked too much fun at the
audience... in 1964 they didn't get the joke...

While I admit that ACW had flaws in the plot, i think the biggest problem
when compaing it to other Sondheim musicals is that the resolution doesn't
apply to a huge range of people like most of sondheim's musicals do... it
was a show about people with major mental flaws... which lots of people
have, but 99% are in serious denial about.. so it came off as more offensive
than enlightening....

it was the same thing as Assassins... it showed you things about yourself
that you never knew, and quite frankly didn't want to know... most people
are comfortable hiding from themselves... so they don't want to be put in an
uncomfortable position...

hopefully the new revival of Assassins will shed some new light on people's
inner emotions....

As far as Anyone Can Whistle is concerned, I hope it gets revived one
day...WITH NEW ORCHESTRATIONS... it's tough for a Sondheim appreciator to
"appreciate" the cast album because of it's terrible orchestrations... the
"big broadway" sound it has totally drowns out a lot of Sondheim's artistic
voice in the harmonics and countermelodies... i think the show was
originally written "prettier" than it came out....

Marc

The Kennedy Center is getting ready to do a run of Sondheim!! Unfortunately,
I'll be leaving for college right when it is slated to begin!

Of course...there was that little mishap at the Coconut Grove Playhouse.
I was thisclose to buying tickets for Side by Side by Sondheim, and I've
got friends who already had tickets to see it.

She does? I don't recall either Angela Lansbury or Madeline Kahn doing
that.
I've made a cryptogram out of one of Cora's lines, and if someone wants to
see it, I'll e-mail it. Just ask, and you'll receive.

It is? Personally, I like the orchestrations it has. (And really, you
shouldn't spout your opinion as everybody's or most people's because that
never is the case.)

That could be true, but we'll never know for sure.
Listening to "Simple" always makes me think of powdered sugar because the
first time I ever listened to it, I made myself a french toast english
muffin (yes, an actual food item) and buried it in powdered sugar.

That's an EXCELLNT recording, except for Bernadette Peters, who likes her??
;) I'm kidding, I enjoy being a wiseass. For any Jane Eyre fans out there,
I got my issue of Mademoiselle today in the mail, and there is a quick
article on Marla Schaffel, very nice, good picture too.

I personally found Anyone Can Whistle excellent, my only complaint (at least
with the Carnegie recording which is the only one I have) is "Simple: The
Interrogation," I usually skip over it, it's a tad too long. Lol, that
reminds me of the part in the film Amadeus when everyone sees "The Abduction
From the Seraglio" and the Emperor tells Mozart it was excellent "but it
just had....too many notes, just simply cut a few and it will be fine," and
Mozart says "Which ones did you have in mind?" Hee hee I'm easily amused.
That and terribly sleep deprived :)
