There was a SondheimDiscussion list but my oh my did that die quickly.
My sophomore research project had to be on an American author, and I
convinced my teacher to let me do Stephen Sondheim even though she said he
wasn't "exactly an author by definition" but anyways.... My thesis is how
Sondheim's life is reflected in his songs or something to that extent, and
I'm looking for some help with quotes cause I had a ton written down and
they were in my friend's car but that got broken into. (Who the hell steals
a heavily coffee-stained notebook?!) I remember using some quotes from
Merrily We Roll Along for when I discuss Stephen writing By George and
showing it to Oscar Hammerstein in how he was very idealistic about this
work and how he thought he'd be the first 15 year old to ever have a
Broadway show produced. And I was just thinking if anyone knows lyrics that
have to do with dis-illusionment as well, after all, Oscar told him it was
one of the worst things he ever read. Also, I don't remember, it might have
been from Follies or not but I had some quotes relating to Stephen moving
out of his mother's and in with his father and his father's new wife and his
half brothers. His mother wanted him to stay, she was making him believe if
he left her she would die. But it was sorta being free but still feeling
obliged or guilty. I don't know. In retrospect it probably wasn't Follies.
I had some stuff from Sunday in the Park With George about his creative
process and how writing musicals wasn't as easy as how he would thought.
Let me think... oh, I had a few things about his heart attack too. I'm
pretty sure I took part of Being Alive for that. If anyone knows where I
can get Stephen Sondheim lyrics online that'd really help me out. Please
and thank you! :)
